Beginning this fall, when a player fair catches a kickoff inside the 25-yard line, the result will be a touchback. The ball will be spotted at the 25.

I guess it is safer but it also takes the advantage away from a well placed high kick.
I don't like it. Now every returner will try to field the kick instead of letting bounce. Take away the kicking game in my opinion.
Kickers will do more squibs, taking away the fair catch option.

But the high lob kicks inside the ten will likely all be fair caught. Will be safer.
It would be ok if a fair catch in the end zone took you to the 20. Give the kicker something.
This is akin to the ---everybody gets a trophy---society. People want high scoring --- unable to play defense anymore .
The wussification of America .

Huh...Nothing to do with stopping people from playing defense...

If the offense wants to return it they can...Getting the ball on the 25 is what most teams want...Heck that is why they kick it out the back of the endzone if they can.

Used to be the 20. Every rule change in recent years has been to benefit the offense .
Why not just do like you did when you were kids on the play ground and eliminate kickoffs all together and just start at 25.

Just an example of people changing the rules for the sake of change and NOT thinking thing out. If you're fair catching the ball then why would you need protection???

I am still trying to figure out how this cuts down on injuries at all. If you fair catch then your returner is not going to get hit anyway and even if you fair catch the blockers are still going to block until the whistle is blown. If anything you may INCREASE blindsided hits on cover guys. As they will see returner fair catching while the blocker with their backs to the returner will continue to block at full speed.

First off more teams will fair catch...And the rest of that is rambling because blindside hits are not a huge problem on punt fair catches.
Kickoffs suck.

Solution - team kicking off removes the tee and ball is placed on LoS. They are given 4th and 15. Most will punt, but they can go for the first down to retain possession.

Punts are far safer than kickoffs.
Punts are far more interesting than kickoffs.
Onside kicks suck and are entirely luck-based events.
Going for it on 4th and 15 has a higher success rate than the onside kick and is actually football, not some weird kick.

So, you're saying instead of our kicker kicking off from the 35, we get 4th and 15 from that same 35 to start the game, or after we score? Interesting.... Theoretically, the other team's offense could literally never play a down in the whole game.

But what is Tony Pollard gonna do...
Both. Whichever team is due to otherwise kick off to begin the half, and the team that has just scored, gets the ball at the kickoff X and is given 4th and 15.
Note - not my original idea. Watch Jon Bois eviscerate kickoffs here.

We lost a key player on a kick return 2 years ago when the receiving team did a blind side hit on our cover guy after he had pulled up when ball went into end zone and was not returned. Cover guys often let up after ball is dead but blockers do not until they actually hear whistle.
