I wish we were hiring Larry Brown, but looks like it isn't happening.
As great as Brown is (and he IS great), we'll be okay as long as we hire another solid former HC to be the staff version on Cal's Robic..
Some names I like (most I like less than Brown, but still):
- The one I REALLY like - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crews
- He learned from Knight / Majerus, and he has 28 years of HC experience.
- He took two teams with Majerus' players to the tourney, so he can coach.
- He flamed out with his own players, so he can't recruit.
- I see this as Penny / Miller / Madlock recruit, Penny tells Crews what to draw up, and Crews executes Penny's vision.
- He's 64 and likely not getting another HC shot, but he loves the game and knows hard nosed defense. I think he'd be a better pick in some ways than Brown.
Others who are worth a call.
- Successful at most stops, experienced.
- Won at Drexel for a while, downside is he is a former Cal guy, not sure I want Cal guys on staff in this recruiting cycle.
- Would he leave Northwestern?
- legacy, might be able to help some half court motions, would open DC recruiting
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thad_Matta
- Probably won't take it, waiting for a HC job he likes, basically turned down Georgia
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Brady_(basketball)
- knows the area won some games at Samford / LSU
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Kennedy_(basketball)
- LOL why not?
Would have loved to have called Rob Jeter... but he just went to Minny...
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Jeter assistant under Pearl...
<<< EDIT (4/12 - 9:11 ET): >>>
1. From Hometown Tiger (hat tip)
- two 5 year HC gigs (Clemson / Wyoming)
- Now a Dallas Assistant, would a college assistant pay as much as a NBA assistant?
- this doesn't look helpful... https://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/assis...KO0,26.htm
- http://seminoles.com/staff/stan-jones/
- Never been a HC it looks like, but 22 years as a top assistant ain't shabby...
- Memphis alum.. would he come home?
I'll also add...
- He's a great coach, needs to rehab his brand
- A head assistant job might make the nut.
- Worth a thought...

Hat tip to WColt45
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Roccaforte
- 5 years HC at Lamar
- Works under Buzz at VT now, also a former Cal guy
- supposedly a great recruiter
Still, not a bad choice. I'll add to initial post

- he's only been a HC in the pros, not in D1 (I prefer a guy with D1 experience), but he's both an icon and a respected figure.
- Oddly, this would make the Brown hire of a consultant gig a little more palatable...
Hat tip to Joe1
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Patsos
- 14 year HC at Loyola (MD) and Siena, right around .500
- resigned under allegations of poor behavior, call him a budget rehab hire (see Eustachy above)
<<< Edit #5 - Sat 4/14 @ ~3p ET >>>
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Westhead
- Legendary, but 79 and hasn't coached in three years
- Would there even be mutual interest between Penny and Westhead?
- What a history though... I'm not a fan of hiring, but I AM a fan of Westhead.
