Redshirt reform passes. Division I football players can now participate in up to four games without using a season of competition, the NCAA announces. Overdue change but still welcome.
Sounds like there's going to be a lot of "RS" freshman that come available down the stretch for some of these teams.

this is going to be game changing...the amount of redshirts are about to sky rocket...

this isnt getting much attention but this will change the game...4 games of development is HUGE

the applications will be vast:
1) the common notion is if your team is bad (0-5) just throw the freshmen in and start developing them for the future... now you dont, you wait till the last 4 games and then play them..this is going to HUGE for developing teams, 5th year seniors with 4 years experience

2) if a player is injured for a game in the end of the season or a Crucial game and you were redshirting some super touted recruit, you dont throw in the bad 3rd string..you now throw in the super touted recruit without feeling like you are wasting a year on him

3) it would almost be foolish to not play your "redshirting" freshmen

4) 6-6 bowl games are about to be the who's who of red-shirting freshmen

isnt basketball only 2 games for a 30 game schedule....4 games for a 13 game season is essentially half a season, considering you'll likely be playing 2-4 joke games that you likely wouldn't need them for

5) the grad transfer market in 3 years is going to be bonkers

As far as I know, basketball is one regular season appearance and your RS is done. Medical RS's were for something like 1/3rd of the season.

Grad transfers will still have 5 years to complete 4 years and the 4 game redshirt year. That's my take.

And that applies to freshmen players only. If you’re redshirting an upperclassman they can’t even appear in an exhibition, Tulsa ran into that awhile back with a transfer. Is this new football rule freshmen only?

I don't think so. It mentioned in several of the articles that it was partly being done so upperclassmen didn't feel pressured to play through injuries.
So far for 2019, Coach Mo is killing it on the recruiting trail. (On paper)

He is continuing his trend of impressive recruiting hauls by ECU standards, but has yet to have that translate to anything other than a disaster on the field.

SO FAR, for 2019...

9 Committments
8 of which are rated 3*** by 247.
1 of which is yet to be rated, but is expected to be end up a 3* based on his tape.

A couple highlights of the class so far... including a couple bookend Wide Receivers.

WR - CJ Johnson - 6'2" 200lbs
Offers: ECU, Duke, NC State, UNC, Virginia Tech
He is a local kid and played football with Holton Ahlers in high school... which helped us tremendously in beating out the Blue Devils, Wuffies, Tar Holes, and Hokies.

WR - Devontez Walker - 6'3" 175lbs
ECU fended off a late offer from West Virginia to snag this big WR out of Charlotte.

CB - Malik Fleming - 5'8" 170lbs
Offers: ECU, Louisville, Boston College, Syracuse, etc. All in all, he had 13 offers. 12 FBS, 1 FCS.

We have a couple more local guys that we are fighting hard to get, but have to dance with the Tar Holes & Hokies for them, too. We'll see how it goes.
Wake loses its starting QB for opener against Tulane.
Arguably ECU's top priority this offseason for the 2019 class is announcing his choice on Monday!

DT - Keziah Everett - 6'2" 330lbs

ECU has gone all-in for this kid, and was the first to offer, I believe. He's a local kid... plays his high school at Farmville Central, just a few miles outside of Greenville.

He has offers from ECU, UNC, South Carolina, Virginia, Duke, and App State.

We have SORELY lacked a giant space-eater on the DL for several seasons, and Keziah fits that bill.

Fingers crossed that he makes the right choice and plays his college football at home where he belongs!

In a rare occurrence for the G5, Temple commit MJ Griffin was bumped up to a 5.7, the highest 3* rating, and is now the top rated CB in Michigan in the c/o 2019.

BAM!!!

Say what you like about Coach Mo, he may have back to back 3 win seasons but he can still pull in recruits with multiple P5 offers!

Go Pirates! Go Mo!
Mo must be a great salesmen, because you know the other schools are coming at these kids saying Mo probably won't even be at ECU next year. I'm pulling for him.
Everyone should commit with top notch special effects like this.

thats pretty cool. Fitting for ECU! you guys have pretty cool field entrances at least from what i have seen
It really is a shame Coach Mo has done so poorly the first 2 years. He is a heck of a recruiter.

He has "built a wall" around Eastern NC... and has kept 3 local (252) kids home that would most definitely have left for the SEC or ACC.

Holton Ahlers - QB
Offers: Georgia, Florida, NC State, Oregon State, Indiana, Minnesota, Cincinnati, etc.

Keziah Everett - DT
Offers: UNC, South Carolina, UVA, Duke, etc.

CJ Johnson - WR
Offers: Virginia Tech, UNC, NC State, Duke

I really hope this translates to a better product on the field, because we haven't really ever had a coach that could keep the local talent here like Mo can.
So, historically, how many coaches have there been that have started off with 3 or fewer wins in the first two seasons that went on to be success stories?
I guess the one that stands out most is Frank Beamer, who went 2-9 and 3-8 his first two seasons.
Mack Brown's first 5 seasons: 1-10, 4-7, 6-6, 1-10, 1-10. Of course, he showed signs of improvement those first 3 years at Tulane before the back-to-back 1-10 seasons at UNC.
