Quote:Under the approved plan and beginning with the 2018-19 season, the West Coast Conference men’s basketball season will consist of 16 regular season games (eight home, eight away). Every institution will play seven WCC institutions twice, while playing one member at home and another away – based on approved criteria. Additionally, starting with the 2019-20 season, WCC men’s basketball programs will be required to compete in a multi-team event (MTE) each season, annually play more home games than away games, and schedule and play no more than two non-Division I opponents per season. In addition, the Conference must approve all “guarantee” games in which a WCC member is paid by an opponent to play at the opponent’s venue.

Also beginning next season, the men’s and women’s championship format will change, whereby seeds 7-10 will compete in the opening round, seeds 5-6 will first participate in the second round, seeds 3-4 will first participate in the third round, and the top two seeds will play their first game in the semifinal round. Both the men’s and women’s championships will again take place concurrently at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

“As the landscape changes and access to the NCAA Tournament becomes more challenging, we felt it was appropriate to make adjustments in the way we schedule both during Conference play and in the non-Conference portion of the season," said BYU head coach Dave Rose, chair of the WCC men’s basketball head coaches group. “Although it is unique for us to be playing fewer Conference games while other conferences are adding games to their schedule, the disparity in RPI from the top of our league to the bottom is larger than any other conference’s. We believe this approach will allow all 10 of our teams to schedule based on the current state of their program, and all 10 of us can go win more games – which will help everyone.”

Could the move to 16 conference games signal Gonzaga is headed to the MWC?

It signals the exact opposite. Gonzaga got what it wanted and intended from its exploratory talks with the MWC.
Bad move, they still should have left imo.
The changes are clearly advantageous to Gonzaga, who was undoubtedly the driving force behind such changes. It would not be a stretch at all to hypothesize that Gonzaga specifically even asked for these changes, which would signal that - if Gonzaga asked for them - why would the WCC approve them if Gonzaga was not staying?

It is very possible that these such changes may have kept Gonzaga in tow within the WCC. If that's what has happened, then these "discussions' between Gonzaga and the MWC clearly forced the WCC's hand and got the Zags a sweetheart deal.
I'm not so sure this will change Gonzaga mind or not. Reading the press release plus what other 'Gonzaga' fans say, Gonzaga knew about this since June 2017, the WCC just made it official today. I wonder what Gonzaga real motive is? More Money, more competition?
"Every institution will play seven WCC institutions twice, while playing one member at home and another away – based on approved criteria."

Translation: Moving forward, Gonzaga will only need to play Portland and Pepperdine once per season.

Though proposed in 2017, the 16-game scheduling component was just recently approved.
I like the tournament changes actually, especially for the smaller 1 or 2 bid leagues. Amount of conference games is pretty indifferent.

Just means GU is gone. And really, what WCC schools are going to schedule good OOC team to improve the conference RPI? Where are they going to find teams? They won't be able to find them and since the P5 conferences are going to 20 conference games will make it even harder.

This issue is that big on GU's list, the #1 thing is $$$$. The WCC hasn't come out changing the credit distribution and with that, it is GU's biggest issue with the WCC.
Hopefully they do it like the AAC does. Last years #1 plays last and 2nd to last the least(1 game each). #2 then only plays last place and 3rd to last once. #3 then plays 2nd worst and 3rd worst each once.

The one part I don't like is that is says they want to make sure each team plays more home games than away, which means less good games/Tier 1. Powers will not play there and even mid-level works as a tier 1 away, while at home is probably tier 2.
Pretty miniscule changes unlikely to sway Gonzaga back, imo.

Quote:Passed in the fall by the Presidents’ Council, the Men’s Basketball Enhancement Plan also includes changes to NCAA academic-based revenue distribution, men’s basketball unit revenue distribution, as well as an adjustment to the licensing of future Conference broadcast rights.

What were the changes? No details. Guess we will find out if it was enough for GU not to leave.

Interesting. Can't play money games unless the conference office ok's it.

The changes to the WCC tournament format are a reversion to what they used to do. For a long time they had a tournament format like this one, where the top two teams in the regular season don't have to play until the semifinals. It's not just the rest, it's allowing your top teams to avoid an extra game against a really bad team who will hurt your computer rankings even if you beat them again.

While the WCC's public release doesn't give details, it does state that the new plan includes changes to "NCAA academic-based revenue distribution, men's basketball unit revenue distribution, as well as an adjustment to the licensing of future Conference broadcast rights."

Also, thanks to Orangefan's breakdown of the 2019 NCAA Basketball Fund, we see that the WCC has more NCAA units than the MWC and that the pro rata distribution of WCC units is actually $150K more than the MWC's pro rata distribution.

Assuming that the WCC's changes to men's basketball unit revenue distribution will likely favor Gonzaga, and seeing that the WCC's newly-announced scheduling changes and requirements are specifically designed to increase the WCC's tournament revenue, I don't see how the MWC would mean more $$$$.

Keeping Gonzaga in the WCC is VITAL to BYU. Even if it cuts BYU's $ moving forward.
But, What are you guys doing letting a half pint little Jesuit school dictate you? BYU is not some mid major to mess with. You are a big 12 school (if you weren't so politically incorrect that is)

Nice try at a dig on BYU...but by labeling Gonzaga as "a half pint little Jesuit school" you only draw an eye roll. 03-yawn

Oh I have a lot of respect for Gonzaga. But BYU is a big time "non-G5" football power. Sucking ass to Gonzaga is pathetic for a "non-g5" power right?

You tell me cap'n P6.
Are we sure BYU really cares what Gonzaga does? The Zags leaving likely increases the number of tournament bids BYU gets going forward, not decreasing them.
