I'm sure there's some talk in one of the threads but I don't have the time to go searching.

So who's the top choice from fans and the most likely person to get the job?

I thought once the season ended Middle would have named someone since you knew for a week now.

This is the make or break hire for Middle. Of course its that way with every hire we all make. But Middle tends to stick by a hire a few years longer than Western would. With Kermit Davis that worked out pretty damn great. But thats not always the case...

don't get Dickey Nutt'ed ...win just enough to stick around
Aside from the two potential internal options, below are a few of the fan base preferences. Nothing has leaked out so far. The University is using Parker Exec Search Firm - primarily because of the FBI investigation. No particular order...

Earl Grant - College of Charleston
Steve Forbes - ETSU
Mark Fox - Previously at UGA
Joe Dooley - FGCU
Jeff Capel - Duke

I've seen a few other names floated out there from other mids. There hasn't been a lot of interest in assistants a power programs aside from Jeff Capel, but of course he too has HC experience). Folks seem to want someone with accomplished head coaching experience.
Head coaching experience would be #1 on my list. All coaches are going to leave when a dollar figure gets high enough....

training that coach and going through his growing pains then he starts winning and leaves at first chance is a kick in the nutts
It's ok if you can keep that gravy train going though. Of course easier said than done.

Trust me. I can assure you the kick in the nuts we've received over the past week is worse. In the back of your mind you always worried would Kermit get picked off this time but a) we believed him in that he wanted to build MT into a national program and b) you never thought it would be to one of the worst jobs in the SEC. It's more the latter but he gets to go home, so it's hard to be mad.

Plus, given the crap that the NCAA is forcing upon all of us now and more than doubling his salary I guess we shouldn't be surprised.
clt says Sanchez is no longer an option.

Who?

Dirty.
They’re all gonna say they want to “build” something special. 9 our of 10 of them are full of crap. Sure, they want to build it... enough to get that big pay check.

Capel would be a great pick. He put VCU on the map. Recruits well and plays a fun style. Not much of a P5 coach, but I think would have you back quickly.

With Coach K at 71, I wonder if Capel is willing to wait for him to retire so he can ascend to the spot from lead assistant. He may be best positioned there. If he takes an HC job now, he cedes that advantage and is among the many coaches from the Duke tree angling for the job.
Perhaps. There doesn't seem to be an obvious Roy Williams type hire out there for the Dukies that UNC had.
Hope MTSU makes a good hire. We need this conference to start getting 2-3 bids per year.
So, Win Case one of the assistants is following Kermit to Ole Miss. I guess doubling his salary (from $145K to $300K) was the safer bet for him than trying to get the MT job and losing out on both opportunities. Case is the one who's is a former head coach.

Greg Gensing is staying behind and interviewing.

Kermit gets $2.5M for four years. We apparently made a sizable counter. Not exactly sure the details on the length but believe it exceeded $1M per. He was at $750K. Just my speculation here but I suspect MT offered and guaranteed him 7 or 8 years to match the total value of Ole Miss' offer.

NCAA is never going to allow it. They said so on March 11.
Kermit will be making more than Roy Williams at UNC ($2.1 mil)

Agreed. There's no apparent next-man-up like UNC allegedly has in Hubert Davis. Off the tree, there's Capel, Amaker, Wojo, Mike Brey, Chris Collins, maybe Quin Snyder, and Bobby Hurley. Presumably it'll get the attention of any top coach that wants a Mount Rushmore job.

After the FBI investigation is over they may not have a choice. Come next year Selection Sunday may look totally different. Especially if these so called runners bring out their ledgers and former players that have no repercussions start talking.
