UMKC to Summit League

The Summit League is talking about expansion. It seems that UMKC have been in talks in returning to the conference. Other schools been mentioned of joining from the Conference commish are Northern Colorado, Augustana SD, Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth. The article about Augustana earlier this year about them thinking of D1 might be true. The 4 schools from D2 have been talked about for several years to go to D1. They are also looking at eastern schools. This could hurt the WAC if UMKC rejoins The Summit League starting next year.

Those schools were not mentioned by Douple. They were mentioned by Matt Zimmer. A good guy, but someone who just moved up to covering SDSU after covering D2 for decades and he is still hung up on some of those schools. The article just simply says right now nothing is happening with the exception of UND coming over.

No Minnesota school will be moving up unless they drop FB or hockey. They can't afford it. As for Augustana, Zimmer and a lot of the Sioux Falls media want them to move up. First, they have no money. Second, they would need to do something with FB. Drop it or go non-scholarship. Third, they would have to accept going back to the old NCC days of getting their asses handed to them by the larger and better funded state schools in the area. They have a good thing in the NSIC. I doubt they change that.

Relax. The WAC tournament is going on and it is a blast to watch. Give it a rest, let everyone enjoy March.

Douple's Statement

Douple also said a similar thing like Zimmer, but he did not list schools. It seems that they are looking to expand because they could lose a couple more of their eastern schools. What I listed could be a list of who they are looking at in their footprint. Another name not mentioned is Southern Indiana. I only mentioned schools that are around the region with UMKC. Seems the Summit League is not interested in New Mexico State, Grand Canyon and Utah Valley.
Yeah, the last thing we need right now is another rumor mill thread about expansion, collapse, or realignment. We're 18 minutes from tip-off for the first of two semi-finals games. Four good programs with 20 wins or more each are about to play... it's a testament to the increasing quality of the WAC as a conference.

If a team wants to leave, that's on them; I wish them well. If a team wants to join, all the better. I'll believe either when there's an official announcement from the WAC Commissioner. Right now though, it's all about the teams that are in the conference and are competing for the auto-bid.

Crimson - Is there a possibility of moving all of the expansion/realignment type threads to the WAC Smack/Off Topic forum? Not that there's anything wrong with talking about it, but these threads tend to be less about WAC teams and current results, and more about programs from other parts of the country that involve posters who aren't really following any current member schools. Not at all trying to be disrespectful to any posters who follow/contribute to these threads, but threads like this can detract from the excitement of the here and now. WAC-Vegas!!!

Just another DavidSt D2 call-up fantasy thread.

This had to do with UMKC who is in the WAC. Crimson also posted a thread about them losing money and not competitive in the WAC. I did not post this in that thread because it would be a hijacking. This is a legit news articles that have to do with UMKC and the Summit.

There is only one sentence in this article about UMKC. They are listed as a possible expansion target should the Summit expand. Your subject title of "UMKC to the Summit" is very misleading. You could have called it "UNC to the Summit." They got a sentence as well. The article just talks about potential expansion targets if the Summit were to expand.

This has more to do with the Summit than the WAC. And, it is more speculative than based on fact. When or if UMKC actually pulls out of the WAC then this type of thread would matter. But it would matter only because the WAC would need a replacement school; not because of the schools that “might” join the Summit.

I put a question mark at the end of the title. If you pay more attention, I did not say they are going to the Summit. I was making the title as a question is UMKC going to the Summit.

What is the point of your post? In the first two sentences you state that "The Summit League is talking about expansion. It seems that UMKC have been in talks in returning to the conference." Based on the article, your statement is not true. The Summit Commissioner says that “Right now we don’t need anyone." No where in the article does it indicate that UMKC has been in talks to return to the Summit.
You are just making it up.
My take is similar to the reporter. When Douple says they could add a school anytime they want, it is a way of saying nobody is worth adding, nobody brings anything at this time. Put another way, UMKC is not sexy enough, and it's not happening

Douple also mentioned they could at some point in the future lose a team in the east, no doubt referring to Purdue Fort Wayne. But right now PFW is far from the top of any conferences add list. The Horizon and MVC are not expanding, and even if they were PFW is a long shot. They are a case of a school not super happy with where they are, but have no better alternative. (Ask New Mexico State and Grand Canyon about that). So for the moment (meaning the next few years) that is not happening.

There just isn't any reason for the MVC, tHL, or tSL to expand. (Well if the MVC could find a school they really liked to partner with Murray State they would, but they have not found a school they like, so they will stay at 10 for at least a couple more years)

Heck even the Gonzaga move to the MWC, which can still get derailed, but probably wont, is looking to be less of a danger to the WAC than first appeared. That is because BYU is not part of this, and the issues that have to be resolved to bring BYU in are many on both sides. Right now I'd say the odds are bit stronger that BYU remains in the WCC than that they move to the MWC. Definitely they wont be moving this year. And if BYU decides to stay in the WCC, the odds are fair they add nobody. BYU and St. Mary's will want to split Gonzaga's residual credits fewer ways. The prospects (DU, SU, GCU) in no way replace the Zags, so why move quickly?

Bottom line, nothing happening. WAC will have 9 schools in 2018-19, and will be in business for the next three years at least.

People make enough threads, ONE at some point is bound to come true by sheer coincidence of timing. Its no secret that UMKC wants the Summit, but is this any real evidence towards that being imminent?

What have we had on these boards, 4-5 threads now with same/similar subject line?
Give UMKC a conference tournament in KC and keep them in the conference for a few more years at least (5-10) and try to build from D2.

Talking about conference tournaments.
I'm just saying if UMKC is seriously considering being out the door, I think it's worth leaving Vegas for a year or two if it gives a basketball tournament in KC. I love Vegas and it shouldn't move in any other situation, but I like UVU having the chance to get an autobid more.

There is not guarantee that UMKC would stay if we let them host the tournament. UMKC is looking at cost factors. They joined because they thought their basketball team would have an easier time getting to the NCAA tournament. They were also tired of not being able to host the Summit League's tournament, which would be hosted by the the regular season champion of their conference.

The WAC is a conference of convenience. Every school is looking for something better.

Also the WCC conference would take the WAC spot the weekend before the NCAA Tourney. Big Sky and Big West are also interested in in LV for their tournaments.
