Quote:The 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, quickly became political, as athletes used social media to attack Vice President Mike Pence before the opening ceremony and Ivanka Trump before the closing ceremony.

Shani Davis, a U.S. speedskater, even suggested that the decision to use a coin toss to determine who would carry the U.S. flag was racist.

Well now, the ratings are in for NBC's Olympics, and they aren't pretty.

Deadline reports that the combined ratings between NBC and NBCSN on the last Friday of the events “is an all-time low for an Olympics that is on track to be the lowest ever.”

CNN also reports that viewership is down a whopping 24 percent compared to the 2014 Sochi Olympics in viewers aged 18-49. When you add in ratings from NBCSN, the total number is down 15 percent.

The opening ceremony, which normally attracts many viewers who aren't usually interested in sports, was down 8.6 percent from four years ago.

However, ad sales owned by Comcast are up from $800 million in Sochi to $920 million in Pyeongchang, and Brian Roberts, the CEO and chairman of Comcast, said he would gladly renew NBC's Olympics contract.

The increasing popularity of watching the Olympics online is likely to blame for some of the drop in ratings, but even when you combine that into the total viewership, there is still an 8 percent drop from Sochi.

I'm sure some of the loss was due to poor performance by the U.S. team while some was due to the social justice tone.

Get a clue, Media. America does not agree with the radical left.

While you think the squeaky wheel gets the oil, America says, "throw the darn thing out."
Sounds like they need to join Adam Rippon in having a xanax and a drink.

To be fair you can't assume that the ratings drop is due to the viewing public's disagreement over political viewpoints. However, I think it's reasonable to assume that interjecting into sports in general will turn people off from the show. If all the athletes were spouting conservative attacks against liberal politicians - people would be turned off by that too.

Well, technically I can assume but I'm aware that does not necessarily reflect reality.

But, I do know that they lost at least 1 viewer (me) due to their political lean. Also, given the poor U.S. performance I wasn't even tempted to tune in.

But those are the main two themes I've seen in social media.

Correction... they lost 2 viewers. My wife is pretty ticked about it, too.

03-wink

Oh, and I'm not singling out NBC's coverage. Some of the U.S. athletes have been too divisional, too.

Yeah, I also wonder if the time difference played any role. I know I don't like watching stuff on time delay especially when I can just google the results as they occur live, etc....

I watched less of this olympics than ANY since Nadia Comoneci (sp?) was competing.

The slobbering love affair by the left stream media for all things Kommie Korea was insufferable. Could give a rats patootey about Fat Boys stupid sister...
I think the two-year winter/summer cycle also depresses ratings. When it was once every four years, you had months of coverage and build up..
As a whole most of the winter Olympic sports are very unfamiliar to Americans.

It's not really a stretch to say that few people are willing to sit around and watch snow triathlon or jump curling or whatever.............

For me, I was so tired of all the figure skating. It was non-stop, every channel. Now I do understand that a lot of people like it but seeing figure skating on a channel caused me to change the channel almost every time, and I didn't always go back.

I agree with that as well, it’s not near the “event” it once was, so it seems to me anyway.
Granted I've lived most of my life in the South, but I've never felt like the Winter Olympics are a big thing. Also, for the sports I watched, I didn't see anything political. Maybe those things were on social media or something. Then again, I would flip over when they do the human interest pieces.

I would look at the header on what was being covered on a given channel. If Figure Skating was listed - didn't even tune in. Figured whatever basketball game was on was a better choice...........and I don't care much about what gay skaters think or if gay dudes kiss each other on-air......

They can pontificate about all that feely smoochy stuff - I really don't care........I'll watch something else..
Yes on the figure skating thing. Prime time the actual, objective sports. I didn't catch any of the bobsled, luge, etc in prime time, maybe I just missed it.

They put the whole figure skating program on NBCSN and would cut in on NBC when an American skated. My girls and I watched all the sledding stuff on NBCSN in the early morn as we got ready for school and work. They usually replayed that at primetime.

Exactly. Forget party. Think of it as a dinner guest. You can be excited that they are coming--but if they get there and commence to explaining how dumb your beliefs are and how stupid your are for supporting your president...well, if you could change the channel, you probably would. For an older guy like me, nothing is more tedious than listening to a 22 year old explain to me how the world works.
