I agree that he seems to be a "good guy" and he represents the school with class. That said and for whatever reason he has not had success at NIU and he has had a long enough tenure to own responsibility for his record for the past few seasons. It is time to thank him for his contributions to the university and to give someone else a chance. Why is it so difficult to establish a winning basketball program at NIU?

Because nobody(especially the students)don't support the program(s).

They don't support the program because it's been in the crapper for so long. At least now, you can see a win once in a while. I remember the seasons where every game I attended was a loss. It gets very disheartening and disgusting to see loss after loss because after a while, that's all you expect. People don't like going to something that disgusts them and gets them upset.
Looking over the list of active D1 coaches, there are about 110 coaches that have been with their current school 7+ years. Only five have a lower winning percentage than NIU.

NIU: .398
Arkansas Pine Bluff: .364
Louisiana Monroe: .364
Sacramento State: .362
Howard: .302
Chicago State: .219

Outside of Navy, all schools who would find it hard to fund the early-dumping of a loser.

Are his days numbered?

Yes. Unfortunately the number is most likely between 365 and 380.

Navy is up to 20 wins this year so I just updated it with their current record and it now puts them past NIU. The remaining five now all fit the criteria you mentioned.
I would guess a healthy NIU team next year wins 18-21 games. Now, if German and or Bradley for whatever reason are not a part of the equation then no.

Will they be over .500 in our horrible conference too or is the 18-21 games playing Aurora U, Chicago State, Maryland Off Shores, Florida Innercoast?
I would say yes.
Everyone's days are numbered, just like his days at NIU. But his days will not be short enough to please most people. I like the guy; I just do not like him as a coach. The sooner the better.
A schedule just like this years. 2 non D1 schools, 3 major conference schools on the road. A tourney of like caliber teams and the rest crappy D1 teams plus MAC schedule.
What is his best win in 8 years? Buffalo this year?
It is hard to come up with a top 100 win.

Not a single signature win in 8 years. Wow
long overdue. you can make up excuses if you want, but the man has only had one winning season in his tenure. heck, patton had just as quality of a performance in his first four season and he was given the boot.

I hopeful for a great season next year as well. Key will be back. Losing Marin this year devasted us. Assuming everyone stays we should be improved. Schedule will be a big factor but I don't think it will be any easier next year.
Happy Huskie, Patton was let go after Silas senior year and he had no one returning so of course they broke it up. Monty has German a junior, Bradley a senior, Thorpe a senior and Key a redshirt junior returning. I’m told it would be a financial hardship for the whole athletic dept so it’s not worth it especially with those guys returning. Hopefully, it pays off for NIU if not then Monty will be let go!

On the NIU website under Montgomery's bio they mention a top 50 RPI win versus Toledo in 2013-2014. Didn't know they were considered that good.
It also says he is a winner and program builder so take it for what it is worth.
I believe NIU has only 3 or 4 seasons of 20 plus wins. His last 4 Year’s is probably a lot for NIU standards. I know the schedule has mostly stunk! Always on the ESPN3 or CBS sports away broadcasts the announcers talk about how he’s turned things around and is building a solid program for whatever it’s worth. Probably not much(lol).
