Full Version: Coach Scalf nearing 900 wins

Off to a 3-1 start this season, Coach Scalf is now up to 873 wins. Given our track record as a program, it's very likely he'll reach the 900-win plateau this season.

I know we all love Coach Scalf, but sometimes, we need a thread every once in a while to express our appreciation. Through the ups and downs of UNCW Athletics, Baseball has been our lone constant. Sure, we have some "down years" here, but when you look across the D-I College Baseball landscape, it's rare to find a program who considers a "down year" winning about 32 games and "only" reaching the conference title game rather than getting to a Regional. Only about 25 programs in the country have the kind of consistency that we do. And for that and so many other things besides winning baseball games, Coach Scalf, and of course Coach Hood, deserve our undying loyalty.

The number, other than the upcoming 900th win, that stands out the most to me when it comes to UNCW Baseball under Scalf? 13. That's the number of games we've won at the NCAA Regionals. In each of our 8 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, we've won at least 1 game in each.

Other numbers that jump out?

* 75: Players under Scalf who have gone on to sign contracts with MLB teams, either after being drafted OR signing as an undrafted free agent

* 6: Players under Scalf who have gone on to reached the Majors (Brian Smith, Jason Roach, John Raynor, Chris Hatcher, Cody Stanley, Seth Frankoff)

* 9: CAA Players or Pitchers of the Year under Scalf (Battle Holley, Bryan Britt, Mark Carver, Mat Batts - twice, Nick Feight, Ryan Foster, Casey Golden, Alex Royalty)

* 7: CAA Coach of the Year awards (1995, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016)

*2: Years serving as Assistant Coach of Team USA (2003, 2007)

Thank you Coach Scalf for all that you do! You're a treasure that we never want to take for granted.

Hear, Hear!
We are very blessed and fortunate to have him at UNCW. His loyalty and commitment to the school has been invaluable!
He sure hasn't stayed here for the money. He definitely bleeds Teal.
I wholeheartedly agree with every word of the above posts. We are fortunate enough to have him on our side.

And meanwhile he's directly responsible for every single dollar this program raises so that it can self-sustaining.

We're still not fully funded, his salary is meager, and we can only afford to give him a minuscule budget when compared to the other national powers, but we're highly successful regardless.

It's a testament to everything he and Coach Hood do. Baseball is our best program, and they're the reason why.

Amazing.
Coach Scalf learned from the best when it comes to raising extra money (scrounging) and making the most out of what he had/was given - and that was his coach while he was a player here - Coach Brooks. Coach Scalf displays a lot of Coach Brooks traits. And I mean that as a compliment to both men.

A rare find indeed. Someone that's content where he's at(when he clearly could go elsewhere and make much more), doing what he does and that's win baseball games, a lot of them.
Scalf is THE man at UNCW hands down.

Need to name a building after him ASAP.

I was thinking the same thing but didn’t know if it were plausible or not.

Build him a stadium big enough to host a regional and name that after him

Scalf is now up to 887 wins. Closing in on 900! He'll easily get there before the end of April.
5 wins away!
Let's hope he gets three games closer this weekend. We can't afford many more conference losses.
