For starters, give some information on our pitchers. What's going on with Colt Smith? Are there others likely to and ready to contribute? Who is likely to start against South on Tuesday? If our new pitching coach made the calls on who to bring in against the Dogs, he did a great job. I was concerned that the Bullies would feast on our relief!05-stirthepot
Smith has been dealing with some shoulder tendinitis. He will be back for CUSA play, I would think. Maybe sooner.

Powell will start vs USA, per Creg Stephenson (covers South for Al.com). Could be on a pitch count but don't know for sure.

I wouldn't get your hopes up if that's what it is....there's no guarantee of that....even when I was younger, celebrex or bextra couldn't help it some days.....

the -itis can haunt over the course of a season w/o getting a cortisone injection....you can only get a few per year.....and my guess is they're on the banned substance list....if not, that would be great....I don't know those rules.....

I'm simply going to take the 'wait and see' approach and hope for the best....

I hardly think anyone close to the situation is going to divulge that info (rightly so)....

Found an article or two while poking around that answered many of my questions. Take a look at one good one!http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/story...062878001/
Smith may be served better as a midweek starter or long relief when/if he gets healthy. His stuff is pretty average and if he isn't hitting his spots he throws a very hittable ball

I agree his stuff isn’t great but when the current options are Powers and Keys...

Not ready to pull the plug yet on Powers. He was adequate (let some guys on but limited the runs) against a top 25 SEC team. And even then Caillet said that he didn't have his best stuff.

Keys needs to be moved to the bullpen and we should transition Powell to a weekend role. Nelms midweek then we get Smith and Wright in the pen.

so basically what I'm seeing from the contingent is Sandlin starting is a positive, Wallner is now the closer, and we figure out the rest moving forward.....

sounds better than what I read preseason......

if we can go team ERA 4.x with this batting order.......I'll take my chances......

this team is fk'n 'bell ringing' good.....

Seems Keys looked good for a few innings there. Then, he couldn't find the plate. I hope it's a "head" issue that Oz can work out.

I know I’m in the minority here but the odds say that after two seasons of this (and now one start into the third season), Keys is what he is. Whether it is a head issue or mechanics issue, if he were going to improve, you would probably have seen it by now.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he may improve with a new pitching coach. But for now, he’s nowhere near my weekend rotation until he shows that he can throw strikes consistently.

And that's fair. I don't want to throw him to the side after his first outing of the year though. Let's see how he does this weekend. While the hitting talent won't be nearly as good as this past weekend, hitting talent wasn't his issue this weekend. Just throwing strikes. And it doesn't matter who you're playing at that point, if you aren't throwing them, you aren't throwing them.

Not necessarily knocking Powers but it’s not like we have two proven commodities to keep a guy who has pitched at an all-conference level out of the rotation.
