Quote:A North Carolina mom started serving a week-long jail sentence for having her daughter baptized, according to reports.

The 2016 baptism at St. Peter’s Catholic Church when the girl was 2 years old defied a judge’s order in a custody battle between unmarried couple, Kendra Stocks and Paul Schaaf, who are no longer together.

Stocks, 36, of Charlotte, was ordered to serve seven days in the county jail after a judge held her in criminal contempt. She began serving the sentence Friday, WSOC-TV reported.

“It’s just very sad. It’s all a very sad situation,” she told the station at the jail. “I’ll get through this and hopefully come out a better person.”

The station quoted court records as saying Schaaf was a practicing Catholic who attended Mass every week and that the court had issued a ruling that gave him final say in all legal custody decisions, including decisions concerning religion.

The day after that ruling, Stocks went ahead with the christening without notifying Schaff. He found out when Stock posted photos of the ceremony on Facebook, according to the station.

Schaff’s attorney told the Charlotte Observer that Stocks was being punished, not for baptizing the girl, but for ignoring a judge.

“For our system to work, there ought to be consequences for willfully and intentionally violating a court order,” the attorney, Jonathan Feit, told the paper. “I teach my children that. I reject the notion that anybody else is responsible for what is happening besides Ms. Stocks herself.”

The paper reported that the judge’s contempt order said Stocks demonstrated “very erratic, bizarre conduct” during her relationship with Schaaf and after the birth of her daughter “including poor decision-making and an inability to cooperate.”

Don't post stuff on facebook.
She defied a court order and put a judge's back to a wall. Hopefully...What she did though the principle of her convictions was worth the jail sentence.
Look I get why this is contentious... I do... But can a judge really order a patent, either parent, not to have their kid attend church with them?

Looks like the Dad is pissed he missed the baptism and wasn't consulted about it. Since he was a practicing Catholic, infant baptism is a very big deal and since she defied the court order I can understand the punishment

What would be a firestorm is if she was prohibited by the court from baptizing the child because the father didn't want it at all

....also, the fact that the father via court order had basically been given full custody of the child.

Let's see, unmarried couple has a child and the father is given "final say in all legal custody decisions" - wanna bet mom has issues beyond this??

Don't get me wrong I'm all for religion and baptism. This is more about a custody fight than the dad being against religion.....
"Schaff’s attorney told the Charlotte Observer that Stocks was being punished, not for baptizing the girl, but for ignoring a judge."

That pretty much sums it up.

Obviously, the Dad has barely a drop of Christianity in him. Judge doesn't have much either.

She was jailed for baptizing a 2 year old. Let that sink in.

She was jailed for not putting the judge before her religion.

Not to say there aren't other issues with her, but this is really extreme on the part of the judge and Dad.

Or...

She was jailed for disobeying a judge. Not to worry though, plenty of individuals in the Bible did it and came through aight.

Right.

But would she have been jailed if she took her daughter to a grocery store instead?

Yes they can. Its a huge issue in many divorces where the parents are from different faiths.

For a man to get full custody the mom has to practically be a crack head mass murderer.

I agree. She she should have waited. Maybe it was done out of spite? Regardless, I don't fault the punishment.

If the judge told her not to take the child to that grocery store... I'd imagine so, yes.

She could if the father had the ultimate authority and for some reason didn't want her to go there.

My uncle was married to a woman who had a habit of stealing. Everything from IDs, appliances, credit cards, candy, groceries, etc. She would use the kids to steal stuff. When they divorced he got final say over the kids. Knowing that she took them to a grocery store would've had him put charges on real quick.

It extended to a lot of things. Relative's houses, restaurants, if certain people visited the house, church. Pretty much any place not directly to school, directly to the hospital in an emergency, or anywhere that hes not.

Not really. He could just outspend the mom. Every little issue can be used against the mom and the Dad may have the resources and the mom can't afford to continue the legal fight. I know of a woman in exactly that situation and she is incredible with children.
