Good column. Thanks, Dan!

Hopefully they will indeed develop his shooting skills. 4/17 from the stripe is abysmal. The tough, hard working mentality is great, but he will have to become a more well-rounded contributor.
I hope he turns out to be another JJ. He was a warrior and made it so much easier for the other guys. Go get 'em E!
I think he gets a bunch of minutes next year. Brooks is a foul-prone stiff, and Scott is a walking turnover machine. Hopefully Mick can clean that up in the offseason- if not we get to see Nsoseme block shots and brick free throws.

yeah, it'd be nice if they were a little better
I remember when Kenyon Martin could only block shots and grab a few boards. Just sayin'...
Get this guy using his footwork to get inside position for good looks, get some stickbacks then maybe develop a foul shot/jump shot and who knows? Regardless the D/rebounds/hard nose is there.

I remember back in the Glory days of college basketball where it was ok to be an underclassman.

lol
I don't really see Brooks as a stiff... He makes some pretty athletic and impressive moves, it's not like he's Kenny Frease out there.
I think Scott could fix a lot of his problems by being more aggressive, but we're not really leaning on him right now.

Yeah well I am a glass half empty guy when it comes to our underclassmen in the frontcourt. Kyle and Gary have been the best duo we have seen since Maxiell and Hicks. They have made me spoilt.

Understandable. It's nice having athletic bigs that can score inside and out, pass really well, block shots + play defense and do so with great intensity.
Also nice to have two really, really talented wings on top of that. It's a robust team. One we might not see again for a bit. Gotta enjoy the ride now.
I think all of the young big men will benefit from more playing time next year while the guards carry the team. I really like this kid. Brooks reminds me a little of Donald Little maybe not as athletic. Scott reminds me of Darnell Wilks never seamed to live up to his potential
Eliel appears to have a high ceiling athletically and is fun to watch. But the questions remain about the bigs for next season. Without naming names, can they score consistently?...retain possession in traffic?...resist the urge to receive a pass and put the ball on the floor under the basket, turning it over?...make free throws when fouled?...stay on the floor 30 - 40 minutes by not committing silly fouls?

Replacing gifted players such as Clark and Washington is never easy and it suggests UC will be rebuilding next year. I would argue there is no "ready now" player for starting on the frontline. More worrisome as of February 9th: no power forward in the recruiting class. Fan concerns for the inside game next season seem justified at this point. Kenyon Martin made an incredible leap developmentally from his freshman season to National Player of the Year as a senior. For every Kenyon, past rosters are littered with scores of guys who failed to advance their level of play to a next level.

This is dead on correct. There are no "ready now players" on the frontline and based on what I've seen I doubt we'll see one transform into a Clark/Hicks/Maxiel/Martin level performer.

For UC to be successful next year they need to transform into a guard oriented team. Cumberland, Evans, and Broome can be a dynamic trio and then the bigs are mainly role players instead of the focus of the offense. And under that scenario I'd think they'd have to play much faster.

I am much higher on Brooks and Scott than most fans seem to be. Neither have had great years, but it's a little tough with senior studs in front of them. They each have given glimpses of their capabilities.

Brooks has some post moves and should be a good rim protector. I don't get how anyone could call him a stiff.

Scott moves well and actually looks comfortable with the ball in his hands on the perimeter, passing and screening. He is often in the correct position for rebounds, too, but just doesn't finish the job of going to get them.

They'll have to improve this summer, but players tend to do that from their sophomore to junior years.
This should be required reading to all those parents chasing college scholarships for their kids in select sports: Some kid from Congo who didn't start playing basketball until he was 15 took your spot!

No matter how often you practice/play (year round now for most sports), how much you pay (big $$$), how much you throw your weight around, etc. More often than not, God given physical ability is the most important thing.

Good luck to Eliel!

Actually, Trevon Scott has one of the best rebounds per minute played average of any Bearcat in recent years. I expect Scott to be a very important part of next year's Bearcat team.

At this point in there career they are effective role players but neither have shown stretches where they flash the potential of being a consistent low-post scoring threat. Here's to hoping that at least one of them surprises us next year!
I need a nickname for him...I have a mental block on that last name.
