More and more problems are coming to light at MSU. Not just with Larry Nasser but student-athletes in revenue sports, esp. football.

Don't know what this means for say Dantonio.

The AD, Hollis, has resigned.

The legal costs and settlements are going to bury Michigan State for years to come very sad times for alums and students much worse than Penn State
Izzo too wow
MSU will be looked at with a microscope and who knows what more will be found.
The local Michigan media has ignored this stuff for years in East Lansing. They're almost as complicit as the coaches.

It is amazing that the U president and AD collected big salaries and kind of did nothing.

Media sat back and enjoyed the athletic success and kind of did nothing, too. The media is engaged now:

What is scary is one evil person can destroy a respected institution for years this happens when good people bury their heads in the sand look the other way instead confronting the evil and removing it

Agree, with you, '79.

All institutions, composed of people, have their share of sins and skeletons in the closet. The institutions hope that the powers to be don't go through every closet, nook and cranny, etc. looking to what they might find.

That happened to say the Catholic Church with their scandal. It would be one or two bad Priests and then they'd look and find more and look more and find even more...

Now MSU is looking at having say a decade or two sins discovered and brought to the light of day...
It is sad and tragic but Izzo and Dantonio are above reproach. Izzo and Dantonio are two of the very few coaches in the NCAA who I would trust to coach my kid. They have nothing to do with this mess and MSU is still a great, amazing university.

Nassar is a pathetic, evil cretin who will wish he was dead when he thinks about what lies ahead of him in prison.

Maybe.

Izzo seems to have a good clean program.

I'm not surprised what is coming to light in the MSU FB program. They've had problems with it over, what the last couple years.

MSU FB is NOT 'new' news. It has been out there. The light is shining brighter on it now.

I wouldn't be so quick to support Izzo and Dantonio. I know you're a fan of theirs, but you may want to let this play out.

Agree 100%.

It is always fun to be on the bandwagon of successful programs, but success isn't necessarily equal to clean.

I suspect there will be a 'forensic examination' of most of the MSU athletic department and we'll see what we see...

This should be interesting to see how it plays out.

The U president has obviously resigned. As has the AD. Fingers are now being pointed at other offices within the U.

Now folks are going after the board of trustees. And the USOC has moved against its gymnastics program board.

Mitch Albom in his own style of writing describes it well. The days of secrecy in the athletics departments, at least at MSU, are over.

So what happens to Bullough if Dantonio is pushed out the door? All smells very similar to the Baylor debacle. Nobody knows what Dantonio may or may not have known, except Dantonio. Once these snowballs get rolling down hill, anyone even close to the problem usually gets shown the door.

Dantonio already being directly contradicted:

Baylor deserved the 'death penalty' and it looks like MSU does too.
Also interesting: what will happen to NCAA pres Emmert?

I thought of Baylor watching TV today (Ken Starr I believe was the president/chancellor there).

Sometimes these schools become such big business that the NCAA (and others) don't want to touch them. I think Hollis was too busy counting the money to take action. I assume Starr was out to lunch with the Baylor problems.

And yes, Emmert came across as another one completely ineffective.

I don't see much risk for MSU MBB (MSU is no different than say many D-I MBB programs) but I do see risk for MSU FB.

I sometimes get annoyed that folks like Emmert, Starr, Lou Anna Simon, Hollis, etc. get paid big bucks to keep sports clean and they also seem to have failed big time.
Interesting article by Detroit News. Interview with fmr. MSU AD, Baker. Good Title IX discussion.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/lo...109929212/

Interesting name in the article is MSU trustee Joel Furgeson, a rabid MSU athletic fan. I am familiar with him. For many years he has been front and center with other like George Perles in MSU athletics.

If MSU needs to clean house and change the culture at MSU, Ferguson's gone.
As some of you know I have called greater Lansing home now for over 30 years. My oldest daughter a local high school and Lansing Community College graduate got her masters from MSU as well as her doctorate and works there today. I've interacted with life long Spartans and count many of them as friends. MSU has brought much positive into the Lansing community. Yes as a MAC fan it was horrible hearing about MSU everyday in the paper on radio and TV. As I told my MSU friends I love ice cream but if I had to eat it everyday I would be sick of it. I remember the George Perles scandals a textbook example of what happens when you throw character out the window recruiting. I wonder if MSU sports attendance gets hurt or endowments drop off and the athletic department is no longer self supporting will they call to cancel football? They cut the cancer out of the football program but Nassar feels different maybe a mortal wound. I hope not.
