Completely senseless, unnecessary, and inhumane. Sickening.

Why didn't Niec seek the "citizenship route?"

I agree this entire procedure looks unnecessary, but had he sought to be a legal citizen of the United States, this would not be an issue at all.
Should've been from Norway.
This all sounds about right.

His parents immigrated from Poland when he was 3. He had zero say in the matter. He's grown up as an American. Doesn't speak Polish, has no connections in Poland, his entire life is here in the US. He became a doctor and is doing great things in the community. That's the American dream.

Now, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are after him? That sums up everything about how the federal government prioritizes issues and misappropriates personnel and funds. Can anyone think of a better use of manpower and resources?

As someone on Mlive said...ICE has gone full Gestapo.
It was in his control. Shoulda become legal.
So he 's only had 25 years to get his citizenship?
He has a permanent green card, allowing him to live and work in the United States. Why would he seek citizenship if it doesn't interest him? Have any of you tried to obtain citizenship in the US? Calling it a "hassle" would be putting it mildly.
Should he get a pass just because he is a MD ?

Green card holders agree to follow American laws.

Explain what law he was breaking and why he's being detained.

No, but I've had a handful of friends who have become citizens with no issue. If he can pass med school he should be able to pass the citizen test.
America's immigration system has been reduced to anarchy.

It is begging to be reformed and this is an example of why.

That said there probably is much more to the story than what we are reading here. It would not be the first time mlive offered a half-backed story.

The biggest question is why wasn't he warned that he could be detained, or deported, if he did not become a U.S. citizen and...why didn't he become a U.S. citizen? Seems like there are both legal and moral reasons to do so, regardless of the "hassle." Lots of things are "hassles," but we still do them out of obligation and because it is the right thing to do.

If he had tried to become a U.S. citizen and did not get it, what happened?
Early reports showed his only legal trouble was when he was a kid... looks like more has come out. He got a OWI in 2008 but he got a plea deal. He also had a domestic violence charge but was found to be not guilty.

Several friends from Poland got US Citizenship with no hassle. They were very motivated to do so.
He probably forgot to renew his green card.
Great, let's deport a man who came here other than under his own will, became a MD, graduated from our university and is more than a productive member of society.

Yes, it's a great idea to deport this man.

Morons, every single one of you. I only wish I could so cruelly destroy your families like you Trump knee padders yearn to destroy others' families.

You know nothing about how our immigration system works.

It's our extra judicial secret police that Trump supporters have always wanted.

Neither do you apparently.
