I guess it’s time to see what Coach Carey’s approval rating is...... I’ve given him the benefit of a doubt before, but IMO he’s gotten better at recruiting but not as a coach.... You can agree to disagree. Lol
Yes unless you have someone in waiting who is also able to keep some of the top assistants. They really did a good job recruiting this year and have a good culture. Don't want to lose that.
Absolutely not. I can't wait until he and Montgomery hit the trail. If either gets an extension, I'm done.
Carey needs to leave just as soon as NIU can afford to say goodbye. He was in over his head when he was hired and he has not grown into the job.

He is terrible at evaluating talent and he makes poor in game decisions.
If they itch to give someone an extension, make it Lisa Carlsen. She's a wonderful person and is a superb coach, as she was at Lewis University.
Extension? Monty and Carey (and yes, even Lisa) should be day to day like most of the rest of us. When the contracts expire then they can chat on a one year deal. In many respects they are only here due to the dire straits of the state.

Frazier, as well. STF has been rumored to be looking or have interviewed elsewhere. It’s not like anyone has snatched him up either.

There is no threat of anyone grabbing Carey or Monty from NIU.

STF probably thought we would have built the Master Plan, won an access bowl, and make the NCAA tourney by now.

Sadly the state budget crisis and lack of enthusiasm by the fan base led to no momentum on that Plan and both men sports have regressed under Carey and Monty.
No sane person can think he's doing a good job. I'd use a pg word to describe Carey but apparently this is the BYU board and I've been warned. Haha
I am mixed on how I feel about Carey, but to play devils advocate I will make an argument for him as being a good (not great) coach...

1. Career Record 44-24 (.647 winning pct), (before you go saying it is the MAC, exactly, he is getting MAC talent and winning)
2. I believe he has a winning record in the Big 10 with historic wins at Nebraska and at Northwestern.
3. Great Recruiter (last 2 years have been really good classes). Cleaned up with Chicago talent and has gotten some alot 3 star players including an ALL American.

Is it possible that the "NEW coach" could be worse? I can see this as Mark Trestman replaces Lovie Smith situation.
Lovie was run out of town when he got us to a Super Bowl and playoffs year in and year out (Bear fans how does that sound right about now?). Only to be replaced by Mark Trestman (who went on to destroy the team)

That being said, I see Carey's short comings like not winning a Bowl or being smug with the media. But reading the board you would thing he was Jim Tomsula , Mark Trestman and Hue Jackson combined in one. Just something to think about.
+1

I agree. I was very pleased after the Nebraska game when there was celebration with the players, which told me that the serious issues between Carey and the players had been smoothed over or at least the new blood with the players solved that issue. That is just not enough. The fake punt was a symptom and a huge example of poor in game decisions, and that constant wasting of the last series before the half grates on me. After so many years as a HC he simply should not be making major mistakes in game decisions and evaluation of talent.

The good recruiting class is one thing to consider, but a good culture?

He has to quit being stubborn and be open to changing the offensive and defensive schemes to fit the top players he has. Also, winning the turnover battle is an important part of the game, but holding back your offense just to avoid turnovers does not win the games against the good teams. Multiple 3 and outs are almost as bad as a turnover and tire the defense out by the 2nd half.

8-5 is a good year, but I think we could have had a very good to great year with the right personnel playing and a more diverse offense.

Great post! +1000
I vote for no extension. This year recruiting was easier due to the earlier signing period. And I have little confidence the right recruits would end up playing.

Well said/written JK Huskie... having been a freshman when we were going through the longest losing streak in the nation, perspective is always useful. I remember going to close but heart wrenching loses at Iowa in 1999 and the Illness in 2001 ... seeing we were competitive but not quite there... and of course, watching the refs steal one from us at Wisconsin at 2002 where NIU WAS the better team..

If I could humbly summarize, I think what we want as a fanbase is for Carey to be more nimble..more flexible in his approach when it comes to opponents.... including in game.... again given my age and experience watching Huskie football, wins against Iowa, NW, Purdue, and Nebraska out of the Big Ten (down years or not) was something I didn't think I'd ever see in my life time.... so how do we balance that appreciation with a hunger for more?

The 2015 Ohio State game is still burned into my memory.... up 10-3 and 10-10 at the half, there wasn't a sense the offense was going for the jugular... THAT is what I think we as fans want to see.... play calling that says "hey..we're in this and caution be damned..let's get this"...

On the other hand, I will say this... in my 20 years of watching Huskie football, the players are NOT intimidated.... for me, I almost tear up watching this.. because it epitomizes the "hard way"..it epitomizes how far the team has truly come... even in the excitement of winning at Nebraska, it felt less like "surprise" and more a solid win on the road, in front of 90k, for an opponent so cocky as to pay you $900,000 to come visit.. you can't make that stuff up...

I'll be attending at Iowa, home vs Utah and on the road if possible at FSU this year and while I'm not looking for reckless risk taking, pushing on the gas when the opportunity presents, riding hot hands if things are working (see Huff running at SDSU this year), that's all we want to see...

To a great 2018 Huskies!
Another slightly above average season maybe 7-6 with loss in bowl game. Then we can finally get rid of him. Bring in somebody young to put some energy in to program. If he leaves after 2-3 years then get anotger one or maybe make a move for isu coach. Reminds me of a Jerry kill type but shows he may not jump quickly.

Yes, there has been ridiculous play calls, and coaching strategies. But at the end of they day, any wins over power 5 schools are major achievements and are my greatest NIU football memories along with MAC titles, which Coach Carey has achieved.

I am in the camp of keep him and do not want to return to the 90s of losing game after game and the program is a complete joke......
I don't care about his overall record. I look at recent seasons. He runs an anemic offense, bonehead in game decisions (btw where is uremovich isn't he assoc HC) does he give him no input or is he just as useless as Carey? He gets credited for these recruiting classes but I have yet to see him tied to any recruit.

Anyone who votes for Carey is satisfied with average ooc and beating below 500 terrible MAC teams. Sorry I demand more!

But the QB that played against Nebraska got benched after one bad game.
