A really good MAC contest right in the first week of play when Buffalo goes to Ball State next Saturday...I would say those two have been the favorites in the league through non-conference play. However, Bulls can't overlook a tough Toledo squad at home on Tuesday in league opener.
I might come off as a homer (sorry if I do) but true MAC MBB fans realize that EMU @ BSU might be a match-up of the two best teams in the MAC West.

Big game for the first conference game of the season for each team.

Not a homer at all.. That's a great game on the first day of conference play!

With a little luck, maybe some highlights such as this one (EMU @Oakland)

EMU and Syracuse tied at the half even though JT4 lost about 7 or 8 minutes due to foul trouble (or in the case of teams with bird nicknames: Fowl trouble).

Syracuse shoots 20-26 on free throws. EMU shoots 4-6. Six effing free throws! Foul count was 19-7. That's right, only 7 calls on Syracuse for the entire game.

It was an even game except for the refs.
Didn't you guys say the same thing after the Oakland game?

Welcome to playing in the Carrier Dome. UB game was very similar.
EMU had a lot bigger problems than the refs last night. Syracuse hit shots in the second half and EMU struggled to hit shots and take care of the ball. Syracuse’s defense made things really difficult down the stretch. The final score was a pretty accurate depiction of how the teams played in the second half.
Dear axeme,
Lot bigger problems? I wouldn't go that far. I would agree that Eastern was unable to hit shots near the end of the game, and that is why the difference in the final score.
Dear Frozenbaugh,
If, you don't believe that some games can have homer referees, like the game last night in Syracuse, then you are living in another world. When Syracuse is not called for a moving screen, when Thompson is called for his third foul for hovering around the Syracuse player after an inbounds play, when Eastern players drive to the basket and are hacked by three Syracuse players and no foul called. Yes, those are homer officials, and 19-7 in calls in Syracuse's favor shows a real discrepancy in how the game was called. I will agree that foul calls do not have to be equal, but when it is almost four to one there is something rotten in Denmark, as the saying goes.

Ken, this is how every game in the Carrier Dome goes. Foul calls in the Buffalo game were 24-13 and free throws attempted were 29-13. And this is a game that Buffalo was within one score under four minutes left. Very hard to beat a team with those numbers, but it isn't surprising.
Well, it just looked liked that Eastern lost because of the refs against Oakland also. Losing two games in a row because of the refs sucks.
Wasn't it Syracuse that had that ridiculously bad call on a kick against Toledo in football?
Fact remains that in MBB referees are so much more of a factor than in CFB, etc.

I still maintain that it is because of several reasons:

1). Game involving high majors are played before large crowds which are literally on top of the court. Crowds can influence game officials.

2). The game is perceived to mean more to say 'Cuse which could be a bubble team for the NCAAs. A "MAC bubble team" is an oxymoron.

3). As these are not conference games, the refs are actually indebted to the schools/conferences for the work. If these 3 game officials called the game the other way (favoring EMU) they wouldn't get many officiating opportunities in the east during the OOC part of the MBB season.

Yep, yep, yep...

And I say any D-I MBB coach who says "we'll play anyone, anywhere..." is a b*ll s*itter'

High major coaches spend more time researching schedules, etc. than researching their investments, etc.

Yep, kick was no good... Then it was reviewed, and they deemed it necessary to still say it was good, when it was obviously wide...
Earlier in the season o$u squeezed out a win against the Rockets with a 15-2 discrepancy in penalties called... No MAC team was gonna knock off the suckeyes in the Shoe that afternoon... The officiating crew was disciplined later, FWIW...
Eastern and Buffalo, I feel your pain ... The way it is ... 03-banghead

we lost to Oakland because Oakland played better. i'm sure we would have lost to Syracuse regardless, but the refs were really bad.
Clearly the NCAA has an agenda. Protect the high majors to justify more of them being in the NCAA tournament. Cinderella's are cute but they don't bring in the revenue. It's all about the money.

At least Jim Boeheim has the balls to schedule mid-majors that can beat his team. Michigan won't schedule Eastern or Oakland. Belein won't take the risk of a bad loss on his record. The mac and the big boys are at opposite ends of the scheduling Spectrum. The Mac struggles to get games against other D1 schools whilst the big boys can pick and choose. Money, money, money. Don't wait for the NCAA to ever step in and fix this ( like limiting the number of home games a team can schedule or mandating that the big boys play a few roadies against mid-majors).
