Only six years ago, the Golden Flashes were nationally ranked, playing in the MACC and losing 37-44 in 2OT's to a NIU that went to the Orange Bowl. Too soon to pull the plug.
One season isn't much to pin future hope on is it? Kent will be Kent and just keep plodding along till $ disappear completely and at some point the $ 's will stop and so will the program
I think that a number of G5 chronically losing programs will be looking at athletic $$ as the changing role of brick and mortar schools evolves. I go back to the BGSUcks AD's comments last year where he said that if they sold out EVERY FB VB MBB WBB and Hockey game they still would not cover their budget. I predict they drop FB and go to Horizon at some point...they have a $10 M fund for MBB if I recall.

ONE season? As I recall they won the MAC as recently as 1972, right after Ealey graduated.
Another silly hustlebelt story.
Id take marshall or JMU in a trade. But nope. They are the mens sport flagship. Theyll be here til the MAC dies.
Someone that does not cover the league writes an article ripping a school. Gee leave that to the people that know the league...anyone on this board for example

The writer should come out from his moms basement and do some actual reporting. And to think of the number of ACTUAL reporters that are out of work right now
C'mon, they are only one Don James hire away from being great again. His teams had Pinkel, Saban, and Jack Lambert on them - along with some other very good players. Remember Lambert playing against Ealey in the last home game for the 35-0 streak. Lambert was a sophomore and I remember looking in the program to see who he was. He looked huge - 6'4" and playing middle linebacker back in the days when the shoulder pads were huge.

Just think - Saban came to Toledo instead of Kent State for his first head coaching job - and he was instrumental in bringing in Pinkel from Jame's staff out in Washington. Kent State missed out on some great opportunities there that may very well have changed their fortunes for years. Maybe not.
IMO, Kent State is a dead program. I know they were in the MAC Championship a few years ago, but that seems to be more of anomaly. They have no money, no following, and almost no recent tradition. When FCS coaches feel their job is better than your Division One School, it's time to pour wasted money into something else.
