Our DC comes in at 580 and OC at 628 and we wonder why we can't hold onto coaches. Freaking many Cusa, Sun Belt and AAC assistants come in before this. It's amazing that we do what we do, given the compensation that coaches receive in the MAC.

My thoughts exactly...
Sunbelt overpays and they still stink
A ton of stats to look at but the MAC is near the bottom and Toledo is #2 in total assistant pay to WMU. The $$ in asst. coaches salary is amazing. It certainly shows that UT gets more than it's moneys worth. Don't know how we come up with the $$ to compete with some of the other higher salaried staffs. But our folks are delivering, that's for sure.
Some one mentioned it elsewhere but a dollar in Toledo goes a lot further than a dollar in other areas which probably helps keep prices reasonable as well.
That economics is fine in those living paycheck to paycheck but when talking about negotiating above cost-of-living positions, white collar and most certainly D1 football coaching positions, 15% saved from a California paycheck goes a lot further than 15% saved from a Toledo paycheck.

Coaches saying they're thinking of their family's security are looking at how far their savings will go, not how much they have to spend to meet needs today. We can spin and spin but I don't think anything we can do economically makes a bit of difference here, when the standard is now more that ten times what even a Toledo willing to risk bancrupcy can afford. All Toledo can hope to offer is desireability. A long term coach is going to be someone who is happy at the challenges and the living Toledo City and University provides.

It makes no sense to get into the salary race. If private money wants to do it, that's private business. But even that can effect University stability.
