Roy Moore ads?03-banghead

Google ads are generated based on your browsing habits, not by the Blazertalk website. If you go to a lot of political sites, Google knows and gives you ads it thinks you will like.

I suspect some of it is targeted by the site content as well. I wouldn't see this on a Virginia Commonwealth University forum, but Alabama is mentioned a lot here so it's easy to assignment of the visitors live in Alabama.

But again, I don't think GTS or any admins have much say on the ads other than "no adult content"... Although I suppose the Gun Supporters for Shopping Mall Outcasts ads are arguably "adult".
Strangely enough I saw Moore ads on Facebook that weren't filtered out.

I use an ad blocker on this site so thrash me.
I see two ads: one for Brookwood Cardiovascular, one for McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. I'm thinking this site shows a certain profile. A really wide profile. Never seen a doughnut ad though, so I can guess who isn't reading this.
Roy Moore's ads indicate that the strongest "four letter word" in Alabama is still "LIBERAL" as though most voters in this state would know one if they saw one. In my lifetime, the most liberal politicians in Alabama were "Big Jim" Folsom in the 50s and George Wallace after 1972. I haven't seen one since.
I get ads for Brookwood CV, Join the NRA & UAT ladies basketball. To quoth the bard Mr. Aday, "Two Outta Three Ain't Bad"

I used to have a big pine tree in my yard. It was too close to my house, so I had it cut down. The guy who did it used a chainsaw. The chainsaw was invented in Scotland. Scotland is also the birthplace of golf. Tiger Woods is back. Tigers are an endangered species.

Am I doing it right?

IMHO, electing Roy Moore may be the chainsaw that cuts down Alabama wood and feeds us to the tigers of the future. He may be "The Last King of Scotland" for our state. Are you a LIBERAL? How would you define one (without quoting Trump).

The ads are delivered by Google. Google delivers ads in the following way, in decreasing order of priority:

1) Direct ad buys ... somebody wants to place an ad directly on this site
2) User specific direct ad buys ... Google watches where you go online and delivers relevant advertising. Say, hypothetically, UAB wanting to serve you an ad for season tickets after you visited the UAB athletic site.
3) User generic ad buys ... Somebody wants to advertise to people in the state of Alabama or in the Birmingham metro ... this is probably why you're seeing the Moore ad.
4) Generic ad buys ... stuff that is mass market and appealing to everybody ... say, an ad for eBay on Black Friday or something like that.
5) Public advertising ... Ad Council / Gub'ment ad buys ... "Hurricane Preparedness" or "Flood Insurance" or whatever it is the gub'ment wants to advertise to you with your own money.
As long as it isn't one for UA-T basketball

That's certainly your right and prerogative, but you're only hurting me, not some Evil Mass OmniCorp International Inc. I do go out of my way to prevent advertising that is annoying from being shown. The following content I have voluntarily banned from being shown:
- Flash / Interactive ads
- Interstitial ads (ads that cover up the entire page until you dismiss them)
- Pop up ads
- Pop under ads

On top of that Google itself prevents generically unacceptable content from being advertised (adult content, drug content, etc etc).

If you hate ads but still want to support the site, Ad Free Premium is a whopping bank busting $15/yr. That is $0.04/day. I probably make more money off people through advertising than I would selling ad free premium. And I'm fine with that. I'd love nothing more than for the site to be self-supported by users so much that advertising was unnecessary. But until that day arrives, I try the best I can to thread the needle of paying the bills but not being annoying in doing so. It sucks that there are so many a**hole big publishers like Forbes out there so aggressively carpet bombing with annoying advertising that everybody just cuts on an ad blocker and doesn't think about it ever again. It really crushes small independent publishers when people do that.

One of the things I've been spending that advertising money on? A graphic artist to rebrand all the areas of the site and produce outdoor rated vinyl banners and business cards, so that BlazerTalk (and all the other active boards) can have an actual physical presence at the games on gameday. Looking forward to having pics from ATTALLA in the future showing a nice big giant BlazerTalk banner under the tailgate tents outside Legion/Bartow.

I get that one a lot!

Thanks for the rundown GTS! I don't live near Alabama, and I'm surprised the local-ness isn't decided by IP address.

If you don't like an ad ... keep in mind Google also lets YOU block it too. See the blue "X" in the corner of the Google ad? Click that and it perma-bans that content from ever being shown to you again. Google doesn't want to show you ads you don't want to see either, because that's obviously bad for business for everybody involved. Bad for me. Bad for Google. Bad for the ad buyer. Nobody wins when you see an ad you don't want to see.

What if I want the ad buyer to waste money advertising to me? Macro repeatedly visit a website linked through the ad?

I understand. I can unblock ads on this domain & see how it goes for a while. These ads aren't as bad as the ones where you have a dozen new web pages pop up.
The ads here are about as non-intrusive as possible.
When this thread started, I’m not even sure that I realized ads were there.
As I go through and look at the ads, I notice that most of mine are from the Midwest (not Alabama)
I despise all political ads no matter the party.
You know it GTs.
