They set the pile up to drive it into the ground and on the first two smacks, it slide right into the ground like 25-30 feet! Soft ground? They fused another pile to that one and it slid another 20 feet, but that last 30 or so feet took a beating from the piledriver. It took like 20 minutes to get that sucker where they wanted it. On the west side, the layout for the concrete casting is underway. You can see where the first of the two massive stairway towers are gonna be. Pretty cool watching this unfold!

Now, on to the juicy stuff.
I’ve heard from a good source that the east side stands will have more piles driven into the ground than the west side for future expansions. This makes sense because if you look at the renderings, the light poles are still much taller than the east side stands in phase one. The north end zone will be replaced next because of now rigdily it is. My source didn’t elaborate too much on that.

See I think for an upper east deck they would have to demo Koch Hall. The would need to move away from the field. I dont think they could build an upper deck on top of the current east plan. As for the lights I think they would do away with light poles and do fixed lighting attached to the new upper deck whenever that is built.
ODAF and the Athletic Department are working hard for Phase 2 to happen ASAP. Selig is talking to some local businesses to help build the North endzone out very quickly. The proposed idea is to create a multi-use building (office space facing out from the stadium) with bleachers overtop. I briefly talked to him about our company helping fund the buildout, but we haven't gotten into specifics. He hinted that it would be a mutually beneficial arrangement; but without firm estimates, I can't confirm that. If it's truly a good deal for businesses, I know he already has interest from multiple businesses, so it could happen after next season. The upper deck on the east stands will not happen until a large chunk of Phase 1 is paid for and attendance numbers support the need for an expansion to 30k seats. I'm guessing no sooner than 2-3 years, but more likely in 5+ years.

ODAF is WAY ahead of the curve with the new tax law adjustments. I highly doubt they're going to see much of a drop off in donations. Quite frankly, with the new stadium catering to big donors with the VIP seating on the West stands, we could see a HUGE influx of donations. The luxury concourse is going to be ridiculously nice and a way better game experience than the current beer garden. The beer garden will likely be opened up to many, many more fans as a direct result of the new luxury concourse.
In the renderings, it shows lights mounted to the top of the stands.

I believe the lighting design has changed from rendering, which is not surprising. At the time the renderings were done, I'm sure they had not fully engaged with the electrical engineers, electrical subcontractor and/or the site lighting manufacturer, which would assist in the design of the photometrics and value engineering. With that said, it appears to me that there is plenty of room for the 3rd deck on the East side without having to relocate the newly installed light poles.

I disagree. Even HM has said on twitter that Koch would have to go down for an upper deck. To me this is one of the reasons why they changed the lighting. Much easier to replace/move poles vs mounted lights

This is good news. The end zone is an eyesore. The sooner thats gone, the better. I also thought new suites going in either where the press box is (that looks temporary) or under the press box was a priority. Does the club area change that?I don't like it, but have to agree that theres no need to expand with an upper deck until the ticket demand is such that we need to. Why does an expansion have to take place on the east? Land? The west side is better from a sun perspective.

I believe Kock would come down for better access around the finished stadium, etc. It may not be necessary to demo Kock for construction purposes, which is what I was referring to.

If the new suites are still in the plans, it won't be until Phase 2 for sure. The new luxury concourse seats like 350 big donors, so it should generate a lot more revenue than the luxury boxes could have.

After watching this video. I actually like the dark colors surrounding the field. Maybe if it's not too late ODU could do some Dark Blue school colors surrounding the main field of play?

Anyone with me?
Good Lord!! take a look at the web cams. They are pouring concrete today, in the rain!! then covering the wet concrete with plastic. Gotta love Ballard. Balls to the wall baby!
Looks like all the piles are done on the West side. East side looks like they might finish today or tomorrow.

Master plan from 2013 calls for Koch Hall to get the axe. It's probably just a matter of time.

Not the current thought which is why they are doing extensive upgrades and renovations to it as the stadium renovation is going on.

Didn't realize they were doing anything to Koch Hall.

I don’t think it’s extensive renovations. They are just extending its life til they can replace it with a new building somewhere on campus
Koch Hall is staying put. It is currently being renovated - roof replacement, HVAC upgrade - and will be reoccupied in about a year.
Kock Hall is getting a major mechanical and electrical upgrade along with a lot of new finishes. My company renovated Monarch Hall (former Old Education Building) last year, in preparation for relocating occupants out of Kock Hall and Webb Center for renovations. Therefore, I don't think Kock is going anywhere soon.

I understand they are making some improvements to the building but it was marked for demolition years ago. Unless they are completely redoing the building the plan would be to still tear it down. Its 40+ years old.

Side note: that building is hideous

Yes, it's definitely marked for demolition at some point, but the current project is pretty major so I don't think they will be taken down it soon.
