December 5

One more football related note for this date. On this date in 2011, UAB hired Garrick McGee to be the next football coach. After having Neil Callaway forced on us by the BOT, everyone was excited about what seemed like a great hire at the time. The honeymoon did not last long. But Blazer fans did get to enjoy an interesting mustache for two years.

The Games
UAB takes on Troy today. The Blazers are a perfect 9-0 against Troy and 4-0 in their arena. UAB has won by an average of 19.5 in games in Troy and an average of 14 points at Bartow Arena.

UAB plays its first true road game today. Here's an alarming stat. In the last 5 years, UAB is 1-4 in the first game of the season played on an opponents court.

UAB is 11-2 in games played today.

1979 - UAB traveled to New Orleans to take on the Privateers. Although UAB had played Sun Belt Conference members in their first season, they were not true conference games since UAB was not a full fledged member. The game against New Orleans was its first true conference game. It was also the earliest In the season, UAB has ever played a conference game. UAB won 82-73.

1981 - UAB hosted an SEC team for the first time when Ole Miss came to Birmingham to play. The game was nationally televised on the fledging ESPN network. Things were rosy for the Blazers. They were ranked #11th in the country, undefeated and had just received a verbal commitment from one of the top 12 point guards in the country - Steve Mitchell. UAB beat a previously undefeated Ole Miss team decidedly by the score of 72-58. In the next poll, UAB would reach its highest ranking ever, #9 in the AP poll.

1984 - UAB defeated South Carolina State 73-56.
1986 - UAB defeated Hawaii Pacific 93-75.
1987 - UAB defeated Millsaps 94-59.
1989 - UAB beat Oregon 79-69

1995 - in one of the lowest scoring UAB game in the shot clock era, UAB beat South Alabama 41-39. The previous season, the two teams had combined for 191 points.

1998 - UAB defeated Western Kentucky 87-72. On the Hilltoppers team was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jr. son of the NBA legend. He scored six points, no skyhooks.

2000 - UAB lost at Bradley 75-64.

2006 - UAB hosted Minnesota at Bartow Arena and won a thriller in double overtime 88-81. Frank Holmes played the game of his career, scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds, missing only one shot all night. Paul Delaney led the Blazers with 25 points.

2010 - UAB beat Kent State 75-59
2012 - UAB lost at Middle Tennessee State 84-64.
2015 - UAB won at Illinois State 74-61.
We went to the Elite Eight in '82.
Yep. Corrected
That 2015 game was a great night, where Ill St honored/remembered Torrey Ward
Garrick McGee came in when he was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year award. Many thought he would win immediately because he told Blazer fans two things they most wanted to hear -- UAB could win right away with the players it had and - above all - win with the facilities it already had. When he went 5-19 the next two years, they decided he was not the good coach they had first thought.
