So as a UCF fan I just happened to be looking at the history of the Peach Bowl and remembered that East Carolina won that game back in 1992 ('91 season). Knowing this was one of ECU's best seasons I thought I'd check out who they played that year and noticed to my surprised that they played AT UCF in Orlando that yr. UCF was still FCS (1-aa) in those days while ECU was FBS (1-a). I never hear of ANY FBS playing road games at FCS schools as I assumed it was prohibited or something. Were 1-aa hosting 1-a schools a regular occurrence back in the early 90s? When did this change? Just curious... even the SunBelt and MAC don't seem to play AT FCS schools anymore. Curious what is the reasoning/history of this exactly. Thanks!

I actually asked this same question on the ECU board a year or 2 ago. The answer I got was that we did it both for recruiting purposes and to treat our fans to a nice weather game that we would win. The next several games were all in Greenville until UCF moved up. That said, this is the only time I've ever heard of a D1/FBS team playing an away game at a 1-AA/FCS stadium. UCF actually played us relatively well that game. See highlights below at the 5:47 mark.

Man, those 1991 guys look like they are moving in slo-mo.

I remember wearing those giant shoulder pads. I could barely reach over my head. They were terrible for catching passes.
I was just going to ask about the pads. Guess as technology improved the pads got smaller? Also if FCS hosting FBS was extremely small does anyone know if ECU was the first FBS opponent UCF ever hosted at home?

No, when I played, we could actually hit someone without getting thrown out of the game. We NEEDED that level of protection. Now, if you notice, a lot of players don't even wear thigh or knee pads. Man, we had pads everywhere. We had a butt pad, 2 hip pads, it was awesome. We could absolutely kill each other , and it rarely hurt.

Reminds me of the level of body armor we eventually wore in Iraq. Front plate, Back plate, side plates, Kevlar flaps everywhere. Heavy and hot but you felt damn invincible. Many o' Soldier took a 7.62 and walked away with nothing more than a bruise/broken rib or two.
