I know for a fact he wants to help out Rice Football. Someone should make sure to get his 2 cents for who he would like to see as our new HFC. He has some serious connections and he would be more inclined to help if he had a little say so in a few of the guys we look at...

Then this needs to be cultivated aggressively. Even if he doesn't turn into a Fertitta-esque checkwriter, simply having an association with him looks good for our program. Nobody is more beloved in this city.
Rice Football really will save you money.

Indeed. I'm sure this has been presented to JK in the past, but if it hasn't, please reach out to him/Tanner/Shu with this information ASAP. Every little bit helps.
Mattress Mack was the first thing I thought about when I saw the rumor about Darrell Dickey applying for the job

He's out of the loop, too. 6006 I-45 North between Tidwell and Parker! Gallery Furniture Saves! You! Moneeeeeeeey!
When I lived in Houston, I was involved in several fundraising events. Going to see Mack was always on the list of must-visits, and he never disappointed. He really, genuinely has a big heart.
One of his daughters graduated from Rice.

Would this fall under that athletic/academic contribution restriction?

FYI ... No McIngvales are listed in Rice's alumni directory.

Daughter Laura graduated from UH's Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Daughter Elizabeth has degrees from Loyola-Chicago and UH.

(Son James runs a graffiti spray paint business, Oink Art, in Dallas. I don't find any mention of his alma mater.)

(If one of the daughters did attend Rice, it's possible that she asked that her name be removed from the Rice alumni directory.)
incidentally, I had seen that McInvale is a Bishop Lynch alumnus (prominent Catholic private high school in Dallas ... conspicuous because it is not in highland park, uptown, or addison).

Woah. Really? I thought for sure that one of his daughters went to Rice. My bad.
Interesting tidbit...
Jim Mcingvale - About
Quote:Born in Mississippi, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale attended high school in Dallas, and was a student at the University of Texas and the University of North Texas where he played football for both schools in 1969-1970 and 1972-1973, respectively.
Certainly Mack could be a consultant to the program. Building a mega business from scratch and being the ultimate humanitarian he could certainly bring some good views as to how to market to Houston as an underdog. I wonder if Jones has any ties to him...seems he would make a good adjunct professor or regular guest lecturer.

He and his company would make a great case study.
I once proposed that he would be the perfect hire as athletic director. I'm still not convinced that he wouldn't be.

Does this mean you will not be accepting the job?

wasnt really from "scratch" per se

but Mac has been an asset to the community and cares about Houston, that is something I respect/admire.

And you see it in his daughter with OCD talking about the issue and being an advocate, his kids say a lot about him as a man
