This article names a few candidates.
Quote:Among the candidates expected to get consideration for the Rice vacancy are Stanford defensive coordinator Lance Anderson as well as Cardinal offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren and South Carolina OC Kurt Roper, a former Owls player. Navy OC Ivin Jasper is also expected to be a strong candidate, but it’s uncertain whether he’d leave his current job for it.

Now I like that name.
Ivin has turned down jobs in the recent past and with his son’s health, I’m unconvinced he’d make a move now.

Brian Bohannon would be a great alternative. Currently in 2nd round of FCS playoffs.

...really? I mean, he's used to working with recruiting restrictions, so he has that going for him, but I'd dread seeing Rice run a Flexbone offense, and not in the way you want a UH fan to dread seeing Rice.

Yeah, I mean...especially since the spread has been working so well for us, right?

There's a reason Navy competes on a yearly basis with some of the P5 teams. That offense is extremely difficult to defend especially when everyone else runs the spread and you literally have 4-5 days to prepare for it. I'd LOVE to see Rice get back to a flexbone type offense (i.e. GT, Navy, etc). Plus, you don't have to have the 5 star athletes to be effective running it.

Different is sometimes really advantageous.
Quote:Rice athletics director Joe Karlgaard has hired Turnkey Search, based in New Jersey, to assist him in hiring the Owls next head football coach: "I've just been very impressed with the job that they've done with recent AD and football searches. That being said, make no mistake, that I am leading this search. We are using Turnkey as a consultant. They're going to help us with various aspects of this search, but this is a search that will be run by me."

"We want to be very focused and targeted in finding a new head coach for this program. This is a challenging job, but it's one if you embrace our values, I think is an excellent job. We're so much different than the vast majority of FBS. I think if you can embrace what this place is, you can have extraordinary success here."

Rice athletics director Joe Karlgaard plans to move quickly to find the new @RiceFootball head football coach, but not at the expense of making the right call: "We won't make a rash decision. First, it's about the match and then it's about the swiftness."

In my opinion, our closest analogues at the FBS level are the academies. Therefore, I am all for looking from that tree. I wish we could pry Jeff Monken away from Army, but there isn't a chance of that.

This almost implies they've only just started the search, which is more than a little disappointing.
Outsider here - I know many here will call me a jerk, but there is only one phone call to make. Call Kendall Briles. He can then bring Art in as the OC.

That would be awesome. Then all the coaches could wear flat bill skateboarder hats and sketchers.
My hope would be that we at least call Todd Orlando to see if he's interested. His teams play tough defense, and he knows the area well. Jasper is also a name that intrigues. Just a bit hesitant on either of the Stanford coordinators, just because I don't know what ties they have to Texas (not that it is a necessity, but it is something that will come in handy).

Whatever happens, this is probably the biggest and most significant hire JK will make during his tenure at Rice.

I literally threw up a bit in the back of my throat when I read this post.

We may as well sue ourselves in advance.

Seriously, no thanks. We do not need Art Briles and shady stuff here.

The intersection of "Typical Art Briles Recruit" and "Football recruit with acceptable SAT score" has approximately zero members. This is no mention of the other baggage that the Briles family has at the moment.

Agreed... Why do we need to pay a consultant. This should’ve been JKs main focus for the last 3 months.

I agree. if JK has not been on phone for last three months, it is too late.
I am surprised that it was not a retirement announcement, but a firing. I thought they would give Bailiff that option.

The potential candidate list sounds promising. Time to renew my Owl Club membership and renew/put a deposit for season tickets.
Hopefully that quote about JK running the search is true - last thing we need is Bucky and Brian limiting our search to good ol boys.
Your AD is not going to be making calls mid-season to candidates for a job opening that is 6 weeks away. It doesn't work that way. I'm sure Joe has been evaluating candidates on his own for weeks, but he's not going to admit that to the press.
