from what mick had to say in the enquirer, it seems like he'd prefer his team to lose every now and then

Quote:What was wrong with the execution against ECU?

"It was terrible," Cronin said.

Specifically?

"There's not enough time (to cover it)," Cronin said. "We did not execute well. We did not play well. When you win 10 in a row ... when's the last time we lost?"

That would be Dec. 9, 66-60 to then-No. 5 Florida.

"It's hard to stay sharp," Cronin said.

Quote:Said Cronin, "You can not play well and win, and it gets masked by the winning. That's the danger of not having lost since December 9th. It makes it harder on the coach to hold attention and keep guys sharp. That, and playing some teams that maybe aren't ranked high. But that's why they pay me. I've got to make sure we get sharp."

Eh... I almost feel like Mick is just trying to send a message to his team... a game nobody cares about like ECU is the perfect time. UC has a tough stretch the rest of the way. They probably weren't great, but I didn't think they were particular bad in that game either. ECU hit some crazy first half shots and UC still won by 26.
Random thought: After watching Kansas blow a game at Oklahoma by missing free throws, it got me thinking that Mick and staff should teach Nsoseme to shoot free throws underhanded this offseason....Why not?

Gary started that game as bad as he’s been in a few years. Just wasn’t mentally intonit and seemed to have a little hitch in his giddy up. Mick jumped into his ass several times after yanking him in the 1st half and it had the required effect.

Several of the guys including Evans and Gary blew defensive assignments and that led to some of those crazy shots ECU hit. We noticed that Mick started pulling people and telling them to sit in his seat rather than walking down the bench so that he could explain something specific to them and then would turn around and put them back in on the very next whistle after coaching them up.

ECU was a scrimmage that offered minutes for the bench and some teaching moments.

I was hoping this is what that game would be but we really didn't get to give the bench many minutes because ECU shot out their ass the first 20 mins.

Hoping we can put Temple away early to give the young guys some run tonight.
@Temple the OWLs jumped us, battled for loose balls, played tough D, and it seemed to throw us until the second half. Hoping we
can return the favor..

Nothing I'd rather see either but I fear Temple is the type of team that will just keep hanging around until late in the game.

Arguably, in the AAC, UC plays teams about as good as some of the mid-tier teams in a P5. The problem is, because of the national perception of the American right now, those teams aren't ranked. This season, TCU probably hasn't been much better than SMU but had that top 25 ranking for weeks. That gets the attention of players, coaches and fans. So to me, most of the mid-tier in this conference is akin to walking through a minefield if taken for granted. I'll put Temple and Memphis (playing at home) in that category.

Broome got close to 30 minutes which is probably more than he’s gotten all year. I think Brooks, Scott, Williams and Moore got 10 or more each. That’s pretty good bench time. And they were all out there early in 1st half. Wasn’t like it was garbage time minutes only.
if ecu was a scrimmage then he should be more proud of the team. i understand it's his job to motivate them, just quit being so pissed off. kinda irritates me

"I don't know Chuck, I just don't know. We have a guy who misses a shot then stands and watches as his man runs the floor and scores on the other end...." Some version of Bob Huggins almost every game (btw loved it, but this is what coaches do).
ESPNU has Wyoming hosting #23 Nevada.
Wyoming beats #23 Nevada 104-103 on OT!

Wyoming and Buffalo continue to be sneaky-decent wins for us....more Buffalo than Wyoming, but it's conceivable to have both be top 75 RPI wins by the end of the season.

Buffalo at 27 right now. They will be favored to win the rest of their games.

Wyoming at 58.

If Wyoming can continue to win and get into the top 50, then UC could potentially get 2 tier one wins out of the Cayman Islands Tornament. About as good as you could hope for.

Wyoming is the big question mark as they have dropped some real deuces so far, but Buffalo looks like a REALLY good win on paper at least. They avoided having to play at Toledo, who looks to be the only other competent team in the MAC this year, so it's not inconceivable to have them at 26-5/25-6 by conference tourney time. It's a shame they dropped that game to South Dakota State...they win that and they're probably ranked by season's end.
I've said this before, going into this season looking at the teams in the Cayman Islands Classic, I would not have guessed UC playing Buffalo and eventually Wyoming would end up being very solid wins for us and a boon to our forthcoming tournament resume. I think most folks assumed we were going to play Iowa and they have absolutely crapped the bed this year. In other words, and I agree in particular with Buffalo, that Wyoming and Buffalo can be the tourney resume gift that keeps on giving.

But we need to beat Houston and Wichita. If Buffalo and Wyoming are listed high in our marquee wins (along with a Thelma and Louise UCLA team), that will drop us a seed line on selection Sunday.

Absolutely. It's the body of work. I'm just saying in terms of anticipated strength of these wins OOC, they will end up better than I (and assuming others) guessed.
We've moved up to a 3 seed in today's bracketology. Getting some respect albeit a bit delayed.
