Meanwhile, November 8 is the 75th anniversary of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa that was the first Anglo-American counter-attack against the Axis in the European theater. One of the initial objectives of the American forces was Casablanca, the principal Vichy naval base. The city was surrounded by American troops on November 10 and surrendered that day. Needless to say, the successful operation was a huge boost for the movie!

Torch was a milestone in many respects:
- the first large-scale joint Anglo-American operation;
- the first American ground attack of any kind against the Axis;
- the first amphibious assault by US troops against a continental land mass in a long, long time;
- the first operational command by Dwight Eisenhower, whose success in creating a truly unified command staff of a multi-national force was unprecedented in modern warfare and one of the keys to ultimately winning the war.
Thanks for the heads up on this, George. Casablanca is still my favorite movie of all time. I'll definitely catch it at one of those show times. Also, thanks for the history facts on Operation Torch. Good stuff.
My brother said Casablanca was the one movie he saw at Rice for
which the audience was quiet the entire time.

Lots of important anniversaries coming up.
