Stop calling Kevin Spacey a pedophile for sexually assaulting a 14yo, that only counts for 13-and-under.

Quote:And thus, my second point: Gay pundits’ overblown protests of disgust at Spacey support the very structure of pedophile sex panic—the hyperventilating reduction of queerness to child abuse—that they are trying to fend off. To be clear, under no clinical diagnostic I know of does a drunken, aggressive, and deeply stupid pass at a teenager qualify as pedophilia. Indeed, one working definition of pedophilia is “ongoing sexual attraction to pre-pubertal children … who are generally age 13 years or younger.” From the perspective of helping children and pedophilic men both, pedophilia is best understood as a mental and public health problem requiring treatment and supervision, rather than as a crime. (As a technical matter, there is no “crime” of pedophilia, which is a structure of desire; there are crimes of child molestation, abuse, etc.)

In common parlance, it is viewed as contact with anyone under the age of consent. That may not be the legal or scientific definition, but its the public view.

As for the other, I think that the gay reaction to Spacey's behavior was entirely appropriate and did the opposite of what this article says it did.

In general, the response from those in the entertainment industry has been pretty good about all these recent accusations. Weinstein will leave a big mark just because it was being covered up for so long, but they are taking action against any forms of abuse quickly at this point. House of Cards is already been suspended, for instance.

This really has nothing to do with Slate. The age of 13 reference is from Psychology Today and the story says that it's one "working definition" and it even provides a link to the following:

Sorry, but your anger seems misplaced.
Hmmm. Every thread on the topic you are front and center with an opposing view. Interesting. A little concerning but interesting nonetheless.

Hey man, what's with the whole 'disavow' thing?
The parents of a child that is a victim of stuff like this probably doesn’t care if the kid is 13 or 14, either way they will be very angry.

You want to get in on defending pedos? How about a little grooming among friends. Be my guest.

It's like the nutbags are hardwired for it.

Only a bigot would have a problem with a 26 year old man trying to **** their 14 year boy. This is 2017. Lose your bias.

Let’s start by asking an important question: Is it even natural for men to be in the workplace in the first place? It is well known, for example, that men are not good with money. Companies run by female CEOs perform better in the stock market, and women are better at both saving and investing. It feels uncomfortable to assume that male irresponsibility.........................

I'm not a psychologist nor a pedophile. Are you? I have no expertise to comment either way. Without relevant knowledge, we really shouldn't be putting forth such particulars don't you think?

Right-wing nonsense. It's some unwritten rule among them that seems to apply to liberals alone.

I think we need to draw a line somewhere and adults preying on 13 year olds vs 14 year olds is not where we should draw the line. If you are having sex with 14 year olds, you are sick. Is this not a reasonable stance?

Of course. What I think PT is doing that is wrong is trying to put a definitive age on something like this that can never be definitive. Not derailing the thread, but it's akin to the bills trying to put a definitive week limit on abortions. Such things need to be evaluated on a case by case basis and by professionals, not lawmakers.
