For those of us that weren't able to make it out to the men's basketball open practice, please share some of your thoughts on what you saw.
Trey Porter hurt his knee during practice. It didn’t look good and had to be helped off the floor.

Ugh...for Trey's sake I hope it is not serious.
Someone asked JJ after the scrimmage and he said Trey got hit is his thigh and will be fine.
Not thigh per JJ but rather a minor hyper extension of knee. Should practice tomorrow unless swelling occurs overnight.
Whew, seems we dodged a bullet, not sure I could have handled all the gloom and doom and we are going to suck comments that would have resulted if it was worse
Hueitt struggled (not worried). Godwin really showed well. Xavier Green is going to be a star. Ahmad is ridiculous in the open floor. He easily had over 10 assists. I will go into a lot more depth when I get the chance.
Is that the only thing that happened?

How about some reports please on: The facility itself. New guys who are supposed to be shooters. The Stith's. Point guard transfer from Pitt. Overseas guy. Any recruits in attendance. Thanks if you can provide any details.

Kithcart didn't play much. I assume that's due to giving the guys who are eligible to play this year more minutes.

No recruits were present from what I could see.

Mac...I’ll do a write up later tonight.

Pretty good breakdown. I will add that Brandan looks amazing in transition. He had at least five big dunks on the fast break and was running like a deer. BJ and Godwin both looked pretty good with their mid-range game. Hueitt was rushing through the offense, not waiting for picks to develop.
Is this the healthy version of Brandan? Hes been so inconsistent; but how muhh of that are injuries?

At times, he looks like a 15/10 guy.

He's healthy but he's also in the best shape he has been since coming to ODU. Slimmed down and cut up, clearly put in a ton of work in his off-season workputs.
Thanks and look forward to the further reports.
Ready for the first home game! Wish I could go to Charleston but that Thursday game hurts.
Alright Mac..Just as you requested.

I did not stay for the tour of the practice facility.

Practice breakdown: It was a long scrimmage with various lineups playing. Jones played just about every combination.

Caver- WOW. The kid has developed into a pure star. His vision is absolutely amazing. On the break he sees everything. I said he had over 10 assists but I am actually thinking he had 15-18 now that I really think about it. The best part about Caver last night was that he didn't have to force anything. His shots were open shots and dribble drive. I don't think I saw him take one three (we know he can make those). His stat line had to be close to 15 pts and 15 assists.

BJ- He was great as well. He hit every open shot he got and is electric in the open floor.

Randy- Took some bad shots but as a defender he is elite. He will instantly replace Baker's production defensively and will double his offensive outputs. He got an open look from three and drilled it and it looked about as routine as it gets.

Brandan- Best I have ever seen him play. Post moves and ran the floor and found the open area. He had at least 20 pts. AT LEAST. He fouled way too much. Saw him pick up 3 fouls in a minute and a half.

Porter- Injury is nothing to worry about. He was also great. His post moves were amazing. Post defense was lacking a little bit but we know what we will get from him.

Hueitt- Struggled big time. You can tell he can play and is ready for division 1 basketball but he is a gunslinger. When he is open...it's going up. Didn't shoot well but it was probably just one of those days from a freshman.

Godwin- Legitimate sharpshooter. His form is perfect. In the future he will be an incredible scorer. Love his game.

Carver- Same player.

Alfis- Nothing to see this year but he can shoot. HE MUST REDSHIRT.

Picnkney- Turned the ball over way too much but is a clear leader on the floor. He is very vocal.

Xavier- I waited for him to be last because I am almost at a loss for words. He knocked down a deep three with a quick release. His midrange game is amazing. He is so special. Vision, shooting, rebounding, athleticism, etc...Just awesome.

Mac you asked about kithcart and he is legit. Next year we may have the two best point guards in the conference on our roster. He is a pest on defense and he can shoot the basketball. We are set at point guard for a long time.

Those of you doubting Jones for his comments about playing faster...get ready because it's happening. Not once did he slow them down. Caver has complete control offensively. If he runs...we will run. Our guys can finish and we can shoot the ball. I don't know how good we will be, but the future looks amazing. I am not someone to get overly excited about something, but we really have something to be excited about in 2018.

We played a 1-3-1 zone and with Xavier, Ahmad, BJ, Brandan, and Randy on the floor...the other team had a hard time getting any shots off. They had their hands on every third pass. This year's team is incredibly athletic.

In the end I would not say this is a tournament team RIGHT NOW, however, I do believe it could turn into one. We have talent, if we can stay out of foul trouble.

Fantastic report. We'll see how they look soon enough. Wins over Temple, Auburn and Clemson would be a nice way to start the season.

757, thanks for a great report. I hope that you are dead on in your assessment of this year's team. It will make for a fun season.

A question, which I hope is not taken as negativity, but I really am curious: Is it possible that our "starting" 6: Ahmad, Xavier, BJ, Randy, Brandon and Trey looked as good as they did primarily because there is such a talent gap once you get past them?

If that is the case, then this year's puff-ball schedule might be exactly what is needed -- at least until the rest of the team can start to mesh.

Godwin can’t guard a mailbox. BJ posted him up twice and he fouled him both times before BJ even got the ball.

His D is going to have to improve or else he is useless if he isn’t scoring (and he is a streaky shooter).
