TIE BREAKER

*Division winners are based on overall conference record.

(Two teams)
1. Highest season winning percentage
2. Head to head
3. Highest CFP ranking

(Multiple teams)
1. Highest regular season winning percentage
2. Head to head between tied teams
3. Highest winning percentage in the division
4. Compare records against divisional opponents in descending order of finish
5. Compare records against cross-divisional opponents
6. Compare records against cross-divisional opponents in descending order of finish
7. Highest CFP rank
8. The representative will be the team that has not participated in the championship game most recently
9. If at any point the tie is broken in a multiple team tie, the remaining teams will begin the process at #2

We might need this later on.
As even as slit of teams seem to be, this will probably be needed later on.
I think we're all fully aware that there's a lot of football let to be played so spare us the "still a lot of football left to be played" replies...with that being said, this is an online forum with tons of meaningless banter ; I've always gotten confused at the comparing records in division in descending order etc. stage and so on (#4)...someone explain this to me. Hypothetically, let's say UNT, USM, and UTSA all finish league play w/ 7-1 records:

UNT: 7-1 w/ their loss coming to UTSA
USM: 7-1 w/ their loss coming to UNT
UTSA: 7-1 w/ their loss coming to USM

Next step is division records, all tied at 5-1...what's the next tiebreaker?
For step 4, you start and look at each team's record against teams in your division in order of finish. In your example, you assume the three teams are all undefeated against teams seeded 4-7 in the west since your three tied teams are all 7-1, so that would not break the tie. In theory, this step could break a tie if teams were tied at 6-2 and one lost to a cross division opponent, or the teams had their second losses to different teams within the division.

For Step 5, you're looking at cross divisional record. In you're example, you're assuming they are all 2-0. So on to Step 6.

In Step 6, we're going to look at records against individual East Division opponents in order of their seeding. If, for example, FAU were the East 1 seed, then North Texas would be 1-0 against them in this example, USM and UTSA are 0-0, so North Texas would advance for having the better record against the highest rated east opponent. If, for example, Marshall were the East 1 seed, then this year both UTSA and Southern Miss play Marshall, so that would mean both would be 1-0 against Marshall (which coincidentally means Marshall would not likely be the #1 seed, but I'm using it for this scenario) and NT would be 0-0, so NT would be eliminated and UTSA and Southern Miss would start the tiebreak procedure over again, with Southern Miss beating UTSA head to head.
Epic Mind Blown

Here's my question...what if the tie-breaker goes all the way down to the best CFP ranking? I thought the CFP doesn't rank after 25??

I was trying to come up with a way to say all that and I couldn't have explained it any better myself.

The CFP committee is supposed to rank their Top 25, with a caveat that they rank as many as necessary to include the highest rated G5 champion in their final poll (which may or may not be the CUSA champion). Basically, step 7 is in the CUSA procedure to say "if one of those team are accessed as a NY6 contender by national pollsters, we're going to advance them". If no one is included in the rankings, then it defaults to who hasn't played in the CUSA championship game most recently. While NT and UTSA have never been in the game, Southern Miss and La Tech both have, so that would break a three way tie against them, and then NT and UTSA would go back to the head-to-head.

Personal editorial: I actually wished the highest rated team in the CFP Poll were Step 5 than Step 7. I think being rated in the CFP is more meaningful to advance one team over, rather than whoever the conference schedule maker randomly assigned your team to play in particular year, especially if the common opponent records are the same.

If it comes down to CFP ranking then the committee just picks Rice at home.
