Quote:The realignment era in athletics brought a lot of changes to college football but one of the worst parts was the loss of many longstanding rivalries that were played annually between schools. While it’s been disappointing not to see Nebraska and Oklahoma square off or Missouri and Kansas snipe at each other, perhaps the most notable rivalry that’s no longer around has been the battle of superiority in the Lone Star State between Texas and Texas A&M.

While there’s been discussion in recent years about bringing the annual post-Thanksgiving tradition back, school officials have generally kicked the can down the road or quickly moved on to different topics when the subject was brought up. Slowly but surely though, that line of thinking appears to be changing in both Austin and College Station.

On Wednesday, Texas students voted overwhelmingly to support reinstating the series on the Longhorns’ non-conference schedule as part of a referendum pushed by the school’s student government. The group posted the results on their Facebook page in a video and a whopping 96.71% of those voted to say that it’s time to say “goodbye to A&M” again. While the total number of votes cast was under 20% of the full student body, the survey found only 255 Longhorns who didn’t want to bring back the game.

While you might dismiss the results, keep in mind that there’s one big name who is on board with re-starting the venture in head coach Tom Herman.

“Any time the student body rallies around a cause, I think the powers that be listen,” Herman said Tuesday, according to the Dallas Morning News. “Now, the powers that be are in that position because they have to make decisions.”

Aggies and Longhorns together again? While we don’t want to get any hopes up, everybody’s tune is starting to change on the potential for a reunion. Let’s hope the athletic directors and coaches involve now do a lot more than talk about things and make something happen.

That's a start. Let's see Kansas do the same thing.
First step to move out of the Big 12.
I'd love for A&M student body to vote on this as well.

I know there are people that want the game to never resume, but I'm all for it returning, and would love to know what the current student body thinks. I don't think an A&M vote would be quite as high, but I'd certainly be interested. If both schools voted over 90% I don't know how the AD's couldn't figure something out and get it scheduled after that. The UT vote is a big step forward all by itself though.

Let's get votes at Kansas and Mizzou to resume that rivalry too.

Kansas has an open invitation from Missouri and has ever since Missouri left. Kansas bowed up and said they did not need Missouri.04-cheers

If the A&M students would make such a move..........it might give the Texas administration the cover they need to reverse previous statements and entertain the possibility of the SEC.

Kansas was also asked to not play A&M and Missouri by the old Texas administration to punish those deflectors

The last Texas administration basically ruined the Big 12. Hopefully the new crop of leaders are a little more reasonable.
Absolutely insane that these schools do not play regularly. South Carolina and Clemson have had some bitter feuds over the years but scrapping the rivalry has never been considered.
I've said it before and I'll say it again

They are only interested in this because they are hurting as a program and hemmoraging fans with their new terrible annual B12 home schedule featuring nothing but teams they don't really care about (no, not even the other TX teams)

But if it was A&M struggling like they are now, they would NEVER help out our program and ticket sales by reinstating the series

Never play them ever again. Force them to lie in the bed they made.

This is going to become political and legislation is going to for the UTA-A&M game to become reality again

Possibly, but thankfully the way the TX legislature is structured (only meets in mid January right after FB is done ever other year and only for 10 weeks) it's highly unlikely to ever get past a committee if it even gets that far (too many grads in the lege to torpedo it)

Just a small matter, conventional usage in Texas is "UT" for UT Austin/Texas Longhorns. UTA is another UT System university: UT Arlington. UT Austin never, ever refers to itself as UTA.

I know they don't, but since they became a state after Tennessee I'm not calling them UT on general principal.

Actually, I respect that. Tennessee is a great state, and sent some of her finest to help win Texas independence from Mexico. That's why I give you a waiver on this. :)

I am right there with you on this, 10th. I never want to see them in Columbia again. They already ruined the Big XII. Everyone would be amazed by how many Big XII schools would jump at the chance to leave now, and they are not named Texas or Oklahoma. At the time the GoR was survival for many of the schools. I think some doors will be opening soon.
Money will eventually trump politics and egos and A&M and Tejas will play again every year.
Worst part of realignment has been the destruction of some Great Rivalries . ..

A&M and The Sips should play every year . . . Bring it back . .
