She has started an Engineering Ambassador program (I'm part of it) to help recruit new students, provide Q&A / show and tell sessions and other stuff. I HEARD a rumor that there has been or will be some clearing out of poor performers. No idea how that works with the state though.

Another example of how FECES U has passed us. Also another example of ODU admitting students that could not make it through the rigors of an engineering course of study. We catered to diversity instead of focusing on attracting the best and brightest. Plus we didn't address or pursue new cross discipline engineering fields of studies and we were left behind with irrelevant professors that brought no research funding and unable to teach what was needed. We were a very strong engineering program that became very arrogant as the world passed us by. Now we are playing catchup.

Idk, I graduated in 2011 from the engineering school and there were some really smart students in my classes. To be honest I was probably at the bottom half as far as GPA. But I busted my ass to graduate and had no problem getting a job and pretty much everyone I know has a good job. I find it hard to think that we have a bad engineering program in 5-6 years.

But I do think that we let in kids that don't have a chance of graduating. The diversity thing is fine but should never come before academic excellence. And I personally think the diversity thing is really over played. When is the last time you heard an ODU administrator promote academic excellence.

I hear it, but only at engineering meetings, and only when somebody has been offered free grad school due to their grades.

The Engineering school is ok. Students do pretty well... at least the ones that put in the work. The admin of the school is/was apparently a s*** show though. Hopefully Dr. Adams can bring use that VT experience to really crank things up.

Heard there are new degrees in the works as well. State just denied a Mechatronics Masters degree though.

Is she a VT grad?

I linked her bio, but here it is again

Competitive on a somewhat national level. Is that no longer the case? What happened? What are the best programs at ODU now? I was under the impression engineering, oceanography, computer science, sports medicine/physical therapy and education were all quite strong.

Physics is also quite strong, with the collaborations with the Jefferson Lab. Doesn't get as much publicity as engineering or physical therapy though.
Monarch alumni. Be sure to look in your email for a message from ODU. There is a survey that will inform the upcoming marketing campaign in the works with the new agency. They ask questions ranging from academics, to safety, to athletics. It doesn't take long and is probably worth the time.
Any Engineering alum have any input you want to provide? I'm going to be working with a professor next week about getting a new degree brought to ODU. I'll be long gone before there is a yes or now from Richmond though. Also looking to improve / change some of the existing programs. My goal is to put more stress on the FE for Civil and Mech people with a class in stats and engineering economics. Also try and get that credential to become a part of the culture. As of right now, I can only really recall two professors that have really stressed it.
I am an ODU Civil Engineering Alum with a minor in environmental engineering. Across the civil and environmental world, students from all schools are not ready for work when it comes to AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D if they don't learn it on their own. Lots of students don't have internships and projects to really get the AutoCAD experience they need to land a good engineering job. I think it would be good for ODU to have students take multiple AutoCAD courses to really get ahead of students from other schools. Like I said, I have talked to kids from many different schools (ODU, VT, UNC Charlotte, Clemson and NC State) and they all have had to learn AutoCAD on their own. ODU needs to turning out students that have good engineering skills as well as very strong AutoCAD skills. If you cant do CAD you have no shot of getting a job.

I have not seen the survey

The MET side does 2 classes of CAD as a requirement. I think MAE can do them as electives. I thought the civil path had a one class requirement?

ODU has access to NX software. I think they need to make that a class or replace the 2D class so the new tree would be Inventor then NX. Knowing that would be a HUGE plus.

I'm playing with it right now... no idea why it's being kept a secret.

Yes it has one class that just gets you into the basics but doesn't get into survey information, surfaces, road design or grading. I would say there should be at least 3 classes that should be mandatory and would take the place of some psychology or art type elective. Get this information Dr. Adams, it is crucial.

I have not seen the survey

It comes from the ODU Alumni Association

I will include that. Thank you.
The problem is, our education system is set up to get the non-degreed specific electives. I don't think they will be able to replace something like psychology or film appreciation for CAD. I'm guessing that decision might be above Dr. Adams. I can see them limiting the business / finance group of electives to simply engineering economics.
At the very least, they should offer other CAD classes as electives for the OPTION D path.

Anyway I will try.
I graduated with a Civil Engineering Technology degree in 2015. I can't remember if we had classes teaching BIM back then (I think it was still pretty new as well in the industry) but I remember learning about it in other construction management classes. Now I'm working for a GC and once a week I'm sitting in MEP coordination meetings and would have loved to have learned BIM while I was at ODU

Graduated CET in 2009. Had plenty of AutoCAD along the way, mostly in high school, with 0 Revit experience. Our work using primarily Revit with a bit of autocad. I learned Revit by teaching myself using Youtube videos. There are a TON of resources on youtube for free. If you have BIM software on your computer and you want to learn, I recommend checking it out during your downtime - either while you eat lunch or after work. It's worth it.
HydroCAD and other stormwater modeling software would be really useful to learn in college as well.

Just checked, I see water and sewer cad software on move.
I wonder if TCC has it covered?
off topic: you civil guys do construction?
Any of you familiar with ICF construction? Was talking to some people in class about the islands wrecked in the Caribbean. I wonder if that would be a good way to set up a business and rebuild all those destroyed homes that... hopefully will preform better in the next major storm(s).

Yes and no, I don't do much concrete work. I work for an Environmental firm
The conversation on academics in the "Game Atmosphere" thread needs to be moved here.

GhentFan thanks for your input. Stay at grad school at ODU! Jk go wherever you want but when you make millions just give a little back to ODU LOL

Doubt I will make millions thanks to engineering grad school. I have debated to making a switch though into finance / economics. I love to read about economic theory. Both were my back up degrees if I wasn't able to cut it with calc.

I do plan to give to ODU later, to the engineering school. Get those labs up to shape or add to the scholarship pool. I don't understand the "give back" mentality though.
