Nice story here:

Lazy interview about whether or not football money would otherwise be spent elsewhere, insert name of program, here:

Disappointed with the guy they interviewed for the economic impact piece. He didn't put any effort into our story. He just said what he would say about any small program.

I think this weekend will involve money that will not have otherwise been spent on other forms of entertainment in Birmingham. Anyone else besides me driving or flying from a pretty far away city just to be at this game? How many Alabama A&M fans are in Birmingham every Saturday spending money? I'm sure some live in Birmingham, but not all of them.

Also, Birmingham is not just any city, and Alabama is not just any state. College football is kind of a big deal here, not just one of a number of equal leisure activities or forms of entertainment. If I don't go to a football game on a Saturday in the fall, I'm not automatically going to substitute a movie or a concert instead, which is the premise of the Substitution Effect he mentions. That money will just not get spent that day, because I care about and spend money on few things besides UAB Football. I will sit on my ass at home and watch football on TV instead. During the two years of no football at UAB, I didn't substitute Samford or BSC or Miles games instead.
