Great report but who is our starting PG?

Our starting point guard will be Malik Curry. JUCO all American. He’s a stud. Excited about him. I completely agree about the team. I think this team has great potential. Last years team had great heart and desire but was short on talent and experience throughout the roster. Won’t be the case this year. This team is deeper and more talented and can shoot a lot better, potentially. Last years team won games on pure will. If u look at the numbers, it may have been Jones’ worst team offensively at ODU. But they had great leadership and toughness which hopefully will carry over to some of the newer and younger players this year. I think early in the season we need to catch some breaks. We need to stay healthy and we need Oliver to be eligible for the entire season.

Green stepping up and having the confidence to not defer to Caver/Stith will be huge. I hope the reports on Reece come to fruition. He can really help open things up for Ekizpke
Great to hear about Curry, Reece, and the big Greek. They are keys to having a great year provided that we stay healthy.

(06-15-2019 12:28 PM)Gilesfan Wrote: [ -> ]I think people think recruiting is static. Just because we offered a scholarship at one point doesnt mean it is promised throughout the whole season. Some of the offers are backup options in case others move on. Offers are also pulled. When you hear we offered someone that doesnt mean that were a priority.

This class seems to be pretty solid. I dont like it as much as last years but that was as good of a class as we've had in some time. Not sure what the “problems” are

* Depth at the 5 position.
* Defending guys like Bassey at the 5 position.
* Getting offense at the 5 position.
* Depth at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).
* Getting offense at the 4 position (if Kalu isn't moved there).

Additionally, all newcomers are big question marks as far as how much they will even play with Jeff as the coach. Till they show they can defend to his liking they will face an uphill battle to get playing time. Highly touted recruits - at least as far as the posters on this board are concerned - such as Kah, Hueitt, and Reece (for example) saw very little action their first season with the team. Hopefully that won't be an issue for the new point guards as they will be having to fill approximately 38 minutes of playing time with the departure of Caver.

It depends on what they think they can get from Reece this year. Carver, Dickins, Ekizpe, Karaiskos, and Reece is not bad depth at the 4/5 spots.

From last year they lost 9 mins from Robinson and a handful of BJ at the 4 minutes. This year, Dickens/Ezikpe will see increased minutes over the 25 total they played last year. Reece will hopefully add some minutes. Karaiskos will likely play a handful of minutes. Green/Oliver/Godwin will be able to play some minutes at the 4 when they want to go small.

Reece hasn't shown enough to be a player they can count on this season to play significant minutes and be successful. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Karaiskos may end up like the Greek Forward (Pilavious) they brought in prior to last year - i.e. on the bench and nowhere to be seen as far as meaningful playing time. At this point no one knows what to expect from him as far as being a contributor this season. He may play the role that Vassor did a few years ago - emergency replacement center.

Dickens needs more bulk and muscle to hold his ground in the low post against guys like Bassey in order to be successful. Either that or he needs to learn to keep some spacing off of his man so that he can go up with him to challenge his shot better than he has shown the ability to do. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Kalu needs to be a 4 guy and play the 5 primarily when Jeff wants to play a smaller lineup. If Dickens doesn't add strength and weight then he too is more suited for a smaller lineup center.

Carver is a good defensive 4 player but a liability on the other end of the court.

And they made it work last year. This year they lose 9 mins per game from Robinson and add Karaiskos. (Not saying they will be as good because Stith/Caver are hard to replace).

Yeah. You didn't hedge your bets much there at all.

We lost Caver and BJ Stith, our two best players under JJ aside from Freeman... and Carver is still going to be on the court at least half the game. You are dreaming if you think what is left will be a better offensive team. You are dreaming if you think Curry is going to come in and be as productive as Caver in this system. Xavier better be ready to average 25. We will do well just to win 20 games and probably wouldn't if we were in a decent conference.

Any word of how optimistic the staff is in getting AJ's eligibility bumped up to start the season?
Time will tell of course but I really believe this will be the best team offensively that Coach Jones has had since he has been ODU’s coach. We will have several players that can score this year. Something we have not had in the past.ODU should play a little more up tempo and be fun to watch!

You have consistently year in and year out as soon as a group graduates said we'll be lucky to win 20 games this year....yada yada yada.

Last years team shot 40 percent from the field man. That’s at the bottom of division 1. We played amazing defense and had great leadership, yes. It was as bad of an offensive team as JJ has had at ODU. We had a good record and had a good team because we only allowed like 61 points a game.
Last year's team won games, with defense, pure heart and will. The CUSAT was amazing. Looking forward to seeing this year's team.

blewbyu has indeed been reliable with factual information; however, his post was 99% opinion, not to mention, I was responding to Prideofalion. We lose 2 1st team all conference players that were 4-year major contributors as well as our backup PG that was in the system for 2 years. Those are the facts. Curry may be extremely talented, but he will be the court general for ODU in real games beginning in November and will not participate in his first formal Jeff Jones practice until October. So for the non-conference, we will have a PG with the experience of having a handful of practices and Oliver will most likely be on the bench until January.
I don't understand why people think when a Senior graduates, the team will automatically be worse unless there is a 1:1 replacement. Every returner will be better. Not to mention, we get arguably our best shooter back from injury. Seeing how some of our biggest contributors last year were Freshmen (Kalu, Wade) or Sophomores (Green, Dickens, Godwin), it's not outlandish to expect big jumps from last year--especially as they no longer have Seniors to defer to.

I'm excited for this team. I think they will be very well rounded on both sides of the ball. I think we have great outside shooters in Green, Godwin, and Oliver. I think we're going to get the best interior production we've seen in several years from Kalu, Dickens, and Reece. I hope we can get solid PG play. If we can even get a floor manager out there who takes care of the ball, distributes, runs the floor, and play solid defense, this team could be very good.

Neither poster said Curry will be more productive than Caver. They merely mentioned Curry is a stud. Practice starts in September not October. Also, players are working out with each other right now and by themselves. And each player on campus gets individual workouts with coaches. He will be the starting PG. How will he not be the court general? You don't think the returning players will pass on help about JJ and his system? He will not be a virgin when the season opens.

Count me in on believing we will be a better offensive team. We were 238th in offensive efficiency last year. That was probably the worst offensive team since Jones first year.

Caver and Stith were both great players and will be hard to replace. But, this team will be more well rounded and not solely dependant on those 2 for offense.

Curry does not have to come in and be as productive as Caver. Green does not have to average 25 points per game.

I expect Ezikpe to be a double digit scorer next year. He averaged 4 points per game last year. I expect Green to be a double digit scorer, he did not average double digits last year. Outside of that, the offense will be more well rounded with Curry, Reece, Dickens, Godwin, and Wade. None of them will be relied upon to score 15 per game, but they collectively will do a lot better than the supporting cast did last year.
Xavier Green will get a lot more attention from defenses this season. He needs to get stronger at creating his shot off the dribble. He will see the opposing team's best defender.

But you also saw he could finish with contact last year. We won the WKU game in the tournament with him drawing the contact, hitting the shot and making the FT.
Godwin was a huge missing piece late last season. Hopefully he can stay healthy and open things up for other players on the inside.

He was released fully about one month ago. He has been working out with and without teammates getting into shape. He had also been working out with his younger brother getting themselves both ready for new school year.
Good Interview With Xavier Green.
