For the record, I personally like the Liberty Bowl and Tiger Lane. I have wonderful memories from there and it will always be Home of the Tigers to me. And, the Liberty Bowl is really not that far from campus. This article with comments from Vandy alums is an interesting take from fans of an SEC bottom dweller already struggling to fill their on-campus stadium with home fans on game day. Now one of their bigger benefactors (Ingram Family) is hinting at support for construction of a new off campus venue to be shared with a potential new MLS soccer team. They ain't happy about it. I guess my position is that each school is unique and an OCS isn't really necessary for everybody. Just win and they will come. The article is a long read but pretty funny and mirrors a lot of similar discussions among Tiger fans in here over the years.

Some excerpts from the comments of a Vandy grad lawyer in Montgomery, AL who is about my age....

"Second, it shows the true lack of commitment of the Vanderbilt administration in refusing to even make simple improvements to Dudley, as well as a lazy and cheap attitude toward the sport that it abhors so greatly. Vanderbilt’s administration since the 1960s has wanted to do away with football, but couldn’t figure out how to keep the influx of SEC money without it."

"No one wants to go to the fairgrounds for a football game. Reminds me of going to Legion Field where you have to pay someone $20 to park in their front yard and another $10 to keep from having your tires stolen."
I would think the other SEC schools would quietly put a stop to that

Yep. Especially if the capacity they are considering is 36,000.

Maybe Tom Bowen and Dr. Rudd to tender a letter to the SEC Office?
We need to build one like ECU has nice stadium with room for expansion when we join the BIG
that stadium was essentially rebuilt in 1981. Vandy should completely rebuild the press box (make it taller, more luxurious and more modern) and build an all chair back club section in the open endzone area.

an on campus 40k stadium is perfect for Vandy.

Especially considering they only have... what... 5000 students enrollment? Maybe less than that.

I wanna say they have like 6500 undergrads and something like 4k in grad school...I dunno.

It's a nice stadium. Like I said, rebuild the press box (taller) and build an all chair back club section in the open endzone.

I've always been a pretty avid supporter of an on-campus stadium for Memphis. But, I'm starting to change my tune. Tiger Lane is awesome, and they've made some good improvements to the LB. We're experiencing better attendance now, and I'm not sure that an OCS would boost it that much more (or lead to substantially better recruiting).

plus, it's only 2.2 miles or 6 mins from campus (according to my phone) so that's nothing, really.

I've been told for years by a Vanderbilt alum that owning your own facilities is actually a requirement for membership in the SEC - the conference may not even allow that. Frankly, if Vandy has any ideas about playing off campus they need to take a look at how well Tulane did after they tore down old Tulane Stadium - they had a world class, start of the art facility to play in and they were lucky to play at a third capacity. They need to keep Dudley Field.

Im for an OCS if we can build one. But , it will not help with attendance and wont help much with recruiting - what it will help with it overall school spirit and alumni giving.
Our situation is similar to UCLA's but...our stadium is a lot closer. The Rose Bowl is 36.6 miles from the UCLA Campus.
The Liberty Bowl is not our problem. In fact, the Liberty Bowl is a great classic arena, with continued improvements and modernization of the facilities, it will get better with age.

Vandy's issue is they are behind the Titans, the Vols, and now the Preds in fan interest. MLS comes to town and has any success, they could drop behind that.
No, that was never their issue. They were in the same boat, good or bad, before these teams.

I have run the gamut on the idea of a OCS. We had the choice of playing in the Georgia Dome or Herndon Stadium. I am glad we chose the Dome. When the Falcons looked to be possibly building outside the city I thought, great we get to keep the Dome. Then that fell though and the Braves decided to move and the deal of the century dropped in our laps. You guys seem to have a situation that works. A city with no pro football and a municipal stadium in which you're the major tenant. The only way that gets better is if you could swing a USC tupe management deal.
