At this point in the league's development, I would agree.

Of course it would, but I would bet my first born daughter that you do not get anywhere near that $8 million tv deal. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest anything close to that. I don't even think Aresco has mentioned a number like that.

I'll be interested to see what other avenues we go (NBC, YouTube, etc.)

How can he mention any numbers when he can't even negotiate yet? But if you read from his comments, he thinks that there is a market for the AAC due to the ACC/SEC networks taking content away from the other platforms.
No one will know what the numbers will be until negotiations start and it is announced.
I know you wouldn't like to see the AAC separate itself and become the tweener conference in tv contracts, but that's the whole purpose of the P6 agenda and if you read articles it is working. The P6 agenda everyone knew was a nonstarter from the start because nothing can change that until the playoffs deal is reworked or ends in 2025, but the push is to recognize that the AAC has separated itself from the nonP5 and with our tv deals coming up get paid as such and with tv bowl deals ending soon, also get a better deal there also.
We shall see if he can get that accomplished.

I agree with most everything you say here. However, just because there are a handful of articles about the "P6" campaign, does not mean it is working. I would argue most of the response has been a collective "meh."

But you are right, time will tell.

this

I can see where this is headed.....we offer a 30/70 money split to get P5 opponents and then end up with .500 or worse P5 dregs in our bowls.....pass

the link says for only good p5s that he doesn't want 6-6 p5

exactly, He is talking of a higher ranking bowl, not the type we already have vs P5. Like gator, liberty, champs ect.

Yeah, this sounds similar with the deal the ACC cut with the Orange Bowl. Basically, the ACC gets $27.5M while the other P5s are guaranteed $40M (and whoever faces the ACC in the OB - either the SEC or B1G - gets $67.5M!). This GALLS most ACC fans, but at the time it was viewed as necessary to guaranteed a big-time bowl.

The next time the bowls are negotiated, the ACC will be dealing from a much better position. The AAC might be able to follow a similar path (good money, but less than P5 money the first time around, then better money the next time).

I agree. The league isn't likely to get a 11-2 vs 11-2 matchup lets just be honest unless it is in the access bowl. So if our champ happens to be 11-2 or 10-3 and plays a 8-4 P5 I think that would be solid game. If the league champ is 12-1 or undefeated they are likely headed to the access bowl.

No he hasn't mentioned that number. In fact, he never has mentioned the actual number for the existing contract---Aresxo doesn't talk specific financial numbers. So the lack of a specific dollar amount reference from Aresco isn't evidence of anything other than proof he doesn't talk about the spedific financial details of conference deals.

However---there is absolutely evidence that an 8 million dollar deal is possible. The AAC ratings are similar the Premier League football in the US and are superior to MLS ratings. The MLS recent contract is for 75 million a year and the Premier US rights sold for more than 100 million a year. Those contracts would indicate a 6-8 million value for AAC football alone, AAC basketball, should be worth at least another 2 million per team. My personal feeling is the most likely range is 6-8 million per team (I think we take a slight discount to be on ESPN and we get a promise for a better bowl line up).

Unrelated to this topic, but you should take a gander at the Aztec board regarding MLS. There is some fun conversation over there. In short, the investment group trying to bring MLS to San Diego pulled the bait and switch on SDSU. SDSU then backed out of the deal, and opposed the investment groups initiative. Now, SDSU has successfully delayed any action until 2018, and the City Council (on SDSU's side) will soon vote to give surplus land to SDSU for a stadium and campus expansion. Meanwhile MLS (and the investment group, supported by the mayor) blew any chance they had of bypassing a vote and getting the MLS stadium approved by the Council outright, all by not working with SDSU in a forthright manner.

Some Aztec fans that are MLS fans are now pissed at SDSU. It is crazy.

To your point on the MLS contract, that is an interesting perspective. I am not sure if the two are related, but they very well could be. I cede that it could be an indicator.
The AAC rights IMO will be the tester for the new media outlets and Aresco will be smart to give everyone he can a portion of it. Everyone agrees the mainstream sports media bubble has burst and the next round of media deals will look nothing like they are now. The AAC will be the best rights coming up in a critical time for these new outlets. YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, PlayStation TV, Amazon, etc will all be players in the next round. People agree they will but no one knows how. This is the perfect time for the AAC to be up, IMO. The Power 5 leagues that are coming up behind the AAC will be highly interested in how the AAC bridges this gap.

This is a direct shot at ESPN, if you ask me...Mike Aresco to ESPN - Other networks are showing interest in the AAC

Definitely. It's also telling for ESPN to not have a single story on their website regarding the AAC/media days. I think a break-up may be in our future.

That would the the best thing that could happen to you folks. I am sure many here would change their tune if that happens. Most on this board seem to be willing to give up their first born daughters to stay on ESPN.

I think the $ is much more important at this point (especially with the Big East war-chest coming to an end). Viewership can grow unlike money on trees.

I think NBC is going to be a player and I think they would be an ideal destination. Some crap OTA syndicated network is an absolutely awful destination for anything more than third tier---and even then It's only viable if there is a robust streaming option connected to the package. If we move away from ESPN--I'd prefer NBC as tier one with the top 30 games. CBS-Sports with a 15-20 game package. Tier three can go to a streamer or a syndicated network with a streaming option. Even ESPN Regional (which was basically ESPN's syndication arm) was horrible. Syndication is not a good exposure option for us and frankly---doesn't really pay all that well (that's why they have lost thier content).

If NBC would air one of our games on a Saturday either before or after ND plays and two games on Saturdays ND isn’t playing, we would be perceived as a power conference by the public and many in the media. My question is: Should we take $4 mil and get power conference exposer with NBC or take $6 mil to basically keep the exposure we receive from ESPN? I honestly don’t think ESPN is going to offer us that kind of $$, but anything is possible….
