The "Sunday closing" law specified that a store might remain open Sunday only if it had 4 or fewer employees. This was designed to provide a loophole in the law for small "Mom & Pop" drug stores. As late as the mid60s, the manager of the K-Mart in Eastwood was arrested by the Jeffco Sheriff for violation of that law. He sued for his arrest and fine and won.
It was the beginning of the end for Alabama "Blue Laws",but came too late to save the Morris Avenue entertainment district. The Peanut Depot is the only surviving business from that period.
