Jeez, context.

HAHAHA - what's that you said a long time ago to another lame brained observation someone made? "I can explain it to you I just can't understand it for you." That saying fits here as well. Some just don't get context or have reading comprehension skills. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks any college ball game is "the most important thing" in town, in life, on that day ... the most important anything other than maybe the most important game. If a ball game is the most important thing in someones life then I feel very sorry for their life.
A few years back, a good friend said to me, "I will no longer allow a bunch of 18-22 old boys ruin my weekend!" I stand by that statement.
You know, a little humility & perspective on our administration's part just might help with winning over some of the local politicians we need on our side. Heaven knows Giannini's "The city owes this to us" strategy years ago when trying to get the bond issue passed went over like a fart during a Sunday sermon.

I read the whole quote. Still don't get it. That weekend, southern miss baseball was the most important thing in town.

Yeah, I'm not getting the quote either. If you want to say that there's other things in town .. fine.

But that weekend, it was USM that brought the crowds in and put Hattiesburg on the national map for a week.

Yeah, he should've clarified that it was the most visible thing in town, even if not the most important.

Oh, wait. He said exactly that.

Not in the article I read Harbor. Now is there a chance they clipped it up? Sure.. but the way it came out was a major slap on the university in itself.

Copied directly from the HA article that is linked above and you can click here to read it as well.

“We understand we’re not the most important thing in town,” he said. “But a lot of times we are the most visible. So as athletics succeeds, a lot of other things around town benefit from that. We’re all in this boat together.”

If you have a problem with that statement, you have bigger problems than you realize.
I'm genuinely confused as to how anyone is angered by this statement. We're a school and it's college sports. I love it, but it's rarely the most important thing in town. That doesn't mean the games aren't fun to attend and that I don't want everyone in town there, but the reality is that there are other priorities for a lot of people, especially in Hattiesburg where it's probably only 60% Eagle fans.

He misspelled "If" as "As".

Now that I'm seeing the whole quote, it makes more sense. Even if you think USM is the most important thing in Hattiesburg, you'd be foolish to argue that USM sports are more important than USM academics.

Didn't bother me. It's funny, I used to be the butthurt one around here. A lot of the non-EP members can probably confirm that.

Perhaps you can enlighten some of the others how to not get butt hurt.

Some are beyond education I suspect.

Take up a sport of your own and work on it. Fishing, golf, chasing tail, making holes in paper from far away... drag racing. You end up caring less about the abilities of "a group of 18-23 year-old kids" capabilities and more about your own.

Or comment in an uninformed way on an article you didn't read. Same difference.
