Oh I am sure California is really, really worrying about Tennessee.

So, I moved to Memphis in the mid-1990s and let in 2010. In the 15 years I was there, there were four IPOs:

1. Varsity sports => supplier of spirit squad apparel;
2. Eon Communications => now located in Atlanta;
3. GTx => still hanging on by a thread;
4. Concord EFS => bought out;

Meanwhile, California has produced Facebook, Google, Netflix, SnapChat, and basically a list so long that I don't have time to find all of them.

It always makes me laugh when people - notably Southern Gentlemen - poke fun at Cali. Cali is kicking tail and then some. Alas, for the Southern Gentlemen on this here board, where's the growth dun come from in Memphis?

Rather than bore you with endless reports about Tennessee, particularly Nashville area, being destination state, top 10 in this and that, etc., etc., might I suggest you move to California? That would probably improve morale in both states. Of course, your tax burden would increase just a tad... 04-cheers

"The law bans state-funded or state-sponsored travel by employees of state agencies and departments as well as members of boards, authorities, and commissions."

There's the loophole for recruiting.

The loophole for games will probably be the "revenue collection" bit.

That ban lasted less than a year, and was removed when the legislators did some crafty wordsmithing to allow the NCAA to save face.

Over the last five years, California has outperformed the nation in just about every important economic metric. Yes, the state is big, accounting for about 12 percent of the nation’s population. But its share of economic growth has been even bigger.

The catch. Cali is not a world economy. And that economy enjoys the benefits of statehood.

Well if you consider Texas part of the South (Texas was part of the Confederacy) we have seen California companies more here many times. The most recent one is TOYOTA which moved its North American Headquarters from Torrance to Plano and along with it 10,000 jobs. Here is what California lost. Texas is the one kicking tail.

Then....there is Boeing building a new facility in Plano.

Born and raised in Memphis, I was. And it saddens me that many of my southern countrymen are obviously clueless and bittah when they talk about the great state of California.

Why can we all just get along. COGS

Yet is 1.3 trillion in debt

They tend to leave that part out of the conversation, after all it is just free money, don't mean a thing to them.

Free money...? And who is them? I pay so many taxes to be in biz here. State Income Tax to start with. Payroll taxes and 15 dollah an hour is the minimum you pay anyone if you don't want a total zombie working for ya.

Payroll taxes and Workman's comp brings that up to about 22.50 per plus health insurance which we already paid anyway.

It's all just backdoor socialism. Everybody deserves some of what you've worked hard for........

The people who ram socialistic laws through the system are generally extremely wealthy and privileged such that their lifestyles suffer no impact from any additional tax burden.

Dear Sir,

Please give me a list of Nashville-based IPOs this century and we can compare notes.

04-cheers

p.s. - don't live in California, work there about 5 weeks of the year. California is killing it, no doubt about it. I find it very funny that someone just HAD to chime in about Nashville because somehow Nashville is so much better than Memphis.

Again, just a simple list of Nashville IPOs will suffice.

The Saudis and Kuwaitis must be the most industrious and deserving people in the world since they've managed to have so much wealth. No luck there at all.

I'd move to Texas if they left the union.

Personally, I hope California, Oregon, and Washington fall off into the Pacific ocean never to be heard from again.
