Birmingham Terminal. Oh how we miss thee.

The Terminal Station demolition began with the north and south towers leaving the domed center for last. Almost as a spiteful protest, one night the domed center suddenly collapsed, crashing down through its base into the 5th Avenue tunnel. Fortunately at that time, no autos were passing through so no one was killed or injured.
One present day remembrance of that facility is the U.S. Post Office which was moved from 5th Ave & 18th Street North to that location to take advantage of the station as much mail was then still moved by rail - like in the "REA Away" ads (Railway Express Agency).
I was once told that the original price to save the Terminal Station was modest, but when the Chattanooga Choo Choo became such a big hit, the price went up millions of dollars and no investors at that level could be found. The loss of that station probably saved the Sloss Furnaces which then became the city's only downtown antique property of size.
