Independence is looking better and better unless P5. Scheduling is still improving. Enjoy the AAC games though.
Oh, ok sorry nbpirate, I need to remember there are other Cougars out there...
I wonder if our new tv deal and MWC tv deal will be set to expire in 2025 ?

None of the bowl games outside the Playoff are very appealing to me as a college football fan anymore. I'm much more excited to visit Houston to play LSU and have Wisc, Utah and Boise visit Provo. Also @ Miss St and ECU on the road. I didn't hear a tie in to the Frisco Bowl today, I heard free agent fww.

Hmmm.

That IS interesting. Guess as to what ESPN has in mind for an endgame?

We learned from the Big East experience... if you want to survive, you be nice and play ball with ESPN.

frisco bowl hasnt signed a contract yet besids the AAC... the mwc, mac and byu are all trying to make a strong push for the partner..byu is favored to get it

and as much as i want to believe you see frisco bowl vs smu the same as vs Michigan in the cotton bowl... i dont

BC,

If all tie-ins are filled, in theory are the default team to the at-large bid in Frisco. Again, ESPN can always negotiate swapping teams in any of the 14 bowls they own.
But you have to question a "1 year" extension before negotiations even start...that makes no sense

something is up

1) byu either feels the market is too unstable and will likely get a horrible deal

or

2) byu's deal now ends exactly with the AAC and MWC..and something is up

I called that in another thread a couple months ago and an SEC fan mocked me...I was right he was wrong.
I would not be surprised to see BYU, the AAC and the MWC all receive some sort of collective "best of the rest" type media deal. This will also result in shared governance, scheduling alliances, bowl tie-ins between the parties, etc.
This is VERY interesting. Can ESPN possibly try to become kingmaker? Give the death blow to the MWC and invite the top 3 teams plus BYU to the AAC with a substantial bump in pay and future bowl promises?
Here is the deal on the Frisco Bowl and BYU. ESPN is contractually obligated to find BYU a bowl. BYU has no current tie ins the next 2 years. Therefore, if all the other conferences fill their ESPN tie ins, then BYU either HAS to be placed in Frisco bowl or a bowl swap has to be made.

04-cheers I know you not trolling with your post here, I too find it quite strange it was extended for just one year.

Head coaches or anyone go nuts when their contracts are renewed for only one more year, one year before their contracts go up.

Wonder what ESPN has under their sleeves!!!

You're reading too much into it with regards to point #1. It wasn't a 1-year extension - ESPN simply exercised their option (in the original 2011 contract) for 2019. BYU hosts Utah, USC, Washington, and Boise St. in 2019, so ESPN is getting the 2019 lineup at bargain basement prices.

However, the BYU-Army-AAC-MWC contract expiration timing is not, and never was, a coincidence.

My question is - was ESPN behind the original idea to get SDSU and Boise into the Big East? I know Air Force and BYU turned the Big East down, and SDSU and Boise didn't follow through, but has the environment changed enough to coax them into the AAC the next go 'round? Seems like ESPN could give the AAC-plus a raise by simply not renewing the MWC contract and moving just a few pieces.

BYU, MWC and AAC fill a valuable niche for ESPN - namely the Thursday and Friday night games and the late 10pm ET timeslot...

...I also note that there were only 4 non-Boise/non-BYU MWC games on ESPN/2 last year...
Has anyone at BYU said anything? I would think that a 1-year contract would prompt an explanation sentence containing at least 5 words in the press release.
http://www.heraldextra.com/sports/colleg...4b886.html

It's not an extension. ESPN exercised its pre-existing option for the 2019 season.

"ESPN decided to pick up the 2019 option to continue its contractual relationship with BYU..."
