I've seen reference to the SEC and B1G counting Army towards the P5 OOC requirement. However, this is the first place I've seen it mentioned with the ACC.

I was under the impression that it was only B1G, Big 12, PAC-12, SEC, Notre Dame, and BYU.

I saw that too. So Army counts but Navy and USAFA do not?

Cuse was smart to set up a 2 for 2 with Army. Army is a nice game for Cuse fans to travel too.

Hard to show me a better setting than Michie on game day.

The real question is whether Army, as an opponent, creates a compelling matchup for television. The answer is that they do, which is why conferences and their TV partners allow games with Army to count as P5.

So would Navy and Air Force but they are in G5 conferences. Sucks to be them. +1 West Point

I get it, but this is the first time I've seen it stated publicly regarding the ACC. So, baring any other schools that we have not heard mentioned, it appears that the ACC and SEC both have the same list of P5 exceptions... Army, BYU, and Notre Dame. That makes sense since it is ultimately ESPN that is approving the list and they own the home game rights to both conferences.

The only other exception that I'm aware of is that Arkansas is allowed to count Colorado State in 2018 and 2019 because of Michigan cancelling on them. However, I believe that is a one time waiver.

They do. Old stadiums do it right.

I'm all for scheduling the service academies. Counting them as p5? Not so much. Navy has been pretty good the last couple of years. A few years ago AFA was pretty good. Cincy, Houston, Memphis have also been pretty good. Another 5-10 schools could make the claim they should be counted as P5.

I'd much rather have a better definition for the OOC game. Possibly something like, "a school that has been to a NY6 bowl in the last 2 years." Not a great example but you get the idea.

At this point, it just seems like common sense should be applied to each situation.

"Would those making decisions in Bristol, CT want to put this game on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU?"

Teams like Boise State or Navy would likely warrant a nationally-televised slot against an ACC team. We don't have to overthink this.

CUSE vs Army just makes sense, and they should think about making it an annual game!!!!

Don't remember ACC ever saying it officially so not sure he's accurate on Army.

can this also have to do with TV sets watching?

- An ACC team vs. an FCS gets few casual fans watching outside of the team's fanbase.
- An ACC team vs a MAC/SunBelt gets some more casual fans but is not likely an ESPN game.
- AN ACC team vs. Army can get ESPN to broadcast, get onto the Armed Forces Network for overseas serviceman / women and get a lot of casual fans who were in the military and have an affinity for Army.

I think I read somewhere when they voted to stay at the status qou as far as scheduling... staying at 8+1 model (and less monies from ESPN, per Clemson it was not much once divided and shared out) ESPN also wanted them to agree to add Army to BYU status of counting as P5.. and it appears that the ACC voted to count Army

A couple takeaways I surmised

1. you'll see more teams play multiple conference games in September
2. One FCS team a year should still be okay to schedule
3. expect a team like Cuse to schedule G5 teams from the MAC and the I-85/95 corridors
4. Atlantic and Coastal to remain the same for awhile
5. Notre Dame likes where they are (i.e. Indy in FB)

to the Pitt fan...I'll take the SU AD's statement about Army over your opinion that Army doesn't count.

Perhaps the AD was saying the ACC will allow Syracuse to count Army toward their P5 OOC requirement. They could just be an exception due to geography.

I agree with your takeaways and Army does count, SEC, B12, B10 and now the ACC... Army & BYU both have a national following and they bring in TV ratings...

Liberty, UMASS and NMSU not so much.. so We Now have Indy P5 (ND, Army, BYU) and Indy G5 (Liberty/UMASS/NMSU)

I think the league wants as many members as possible to be bowl eligible, and they'll do what they have to to make that happen.
