Not a fluke at all. Although 7 wins could certainly be our ceiling if we don't have a capable QB ready to go next season, the building plan falls through, and our recruiting doesn't pick up.

Mostly good article, but him mentioning Samuelson & Bergman as names your going to look for on the OLine, certainly hurts this guys credibility. Those 2 will never see the field at EMU, probably not even the 2 deep. OLine still by far our biggest concern for this season. Throw in a missing punter now as well.
Sounds like from @EagleTough that if we see Samuelson or Bergman on the line this year, or ever, we are back to the same old Eagles.

I doubt either will start. There is a lot of talent elsewhere on this team, I expect the defense to be dominant this year. A lot of talent but a much tougher schedule so I am reducing my expectations on the win total.

From what I hear, they are just not in the mix at all.

If we had to play a game tomorrow I believe the starters would be Tallman at Center, Leatiota and Donnellon at Guards, Armstrong at LT, and Nielsen at RT.

The middle is perfectly fine, and I don't think we'd see much dropoff at all from last year. On the outside, both Armstrong & Nielsen have some good experience under their belt, just not at the tackle position. Armstrong actually does have a little tackle experience, but it was shaky at best. Nielsen has strictly played inside, so it's a whole different world on the outside, and he's got a steep learning curve.

Hopefully all of their reps going forward will prepare both to be at least serviceable starters. Beyond the starting 5, it's anybody's guess. Hickey, Pavletich, and Dervil probably the next 3 up. Lot's to be sorted out prior to the 1st game.

Crossing fingers. Still shocked/disappointed we haven't brought in another legit Juco tackle that's ready to compete immediately as a starter.

Hopefully the new OLine coach, and Keen, can work together to come up with schemes and play calling that fit what these guys do best, in order to make the entire unit successful.
Guys, (NOT EagleTough) we need to remember just because someone was recruited at UofM, MSU, etc. doesn't make them great.

B1G schools make big mistakes in recruiting too. Many top recruits never pan out. We just don't follow them close enough to know...

IF the B1G player didn't crack the B1G 2-deeps they aren't going to be a messiah at EMU.

Another red recruiting flag when we bring in a '4 star' Michigan transfer, who takes up a roster space for 2 years, and can't even crack the 2 deep.

Yep, 4th stringer at UofM or MSU isn't going to be all-MAC.

Prep clippings aren't worth the paper they are written on once a player has a year or two of college under his belt UNLESS maybe something like QB, K, P where playing time can legitimately be an issue because of the POSITION he plays (backing up say Tom Brady).

In MBB Murphy doesn't waste his time recruiting B1G players who ave 4 minutes and 0.7 PPG just because they had a B1G schollie.
Dear EagleTough,
Samuelson only has one year of eligibility. He is a graduate transfer.

EagleTough,

I'm not sure about Samuelson because I've not seen him play. I will take your word that he will probably not see the field this year, but I'm also not ready to say he's a red flag. CC could have signed him for depth.

I remember watching the Superbowl a few years ago and they announced during a Pre-game show that the average star rating out of high school for all of the players combined was 2.38. I'm not going to get hung up on star ratings although all of us know in general they are pretty accurate. How many stars did Kilby have out of high school?

At this point I'm thrilled when we get 2 star commits.......any commits.

Word is, Kilby going the Juco route. If so, the chance we see him back in an EMU uniform goes from slim to none.

Let me put in my two cents worth (I want a keyboard with a cents sign. please).

We won in 2016 because we were solid on BOTH lines.

We have to replace 3/5 of a good OL + POC on defense.

Tell me how well we do it and I'll make a prediction.

I Think Crosby will as good by the time he is a senior
I think our D-Line will be just fine. Losing POC is brutal, but both Harris and Crosby aren't finished products, and could very well take even bigger steps this coming season. We also have very good depth inside. I'm much more concerned about the O-Line than I am with anywhere on the defense. I think we should be even better this year on that side of the ball, with all the guys we are returning, and another year of experience in Neathery's system.
I See Johnny n Boeing used as a WR. H back Right End

DLine and defense overall, will be better than last year, in Neathery's second year. Luckily we have Harris and Crosby to pick right up where POC left off. Dawson got a waiver, so he's back after a solid year last year. Granger has dropped 15-20 lbs and seems motivated for his final year.....could see marked improvement from him. All indications are that Desmond Kelly will step right into the rotation.

Much bigger issue trying to replace Wylie and Gardner. I think we're just fine with Leatiota, Tallman, and Donnellon inside. Tallman is a big, tough dude with a nasty streak, just didn't have the feet to play outside. Donnellon now has the size after a redshirt year......always had the athleticism. Could use a couple more Juco guys just like Leatiota, who competed for a starting job the minute he stepped on campus. Not sure why we're having trouble getting Juco OLinemen, when we've done such a good job the last 2 years with the Juco DLinemen mentioned above.
