David Teel has a great article about the two ACC schools in the commonwealth of Virginia preparing for the launch of the network. Teel is one of the best sources for anything VT or UVA, and this article is just another example.

We talk a lot on this board about the upcoming ACC Network and this is a good window into how much of an undertaking it can be for certain schools.

IIRC, he says that only 3 schools - FSU, Duke and UVa - are ready now. He also says that ESPN wants a year of ACC production before launching the cable network. IDK, maybe to show cable companies that it's worth the money?

Great Info Hustle. Thanks for sharing.

Did I understand the following statement correctly? It seems that they are implying that ESPN3 is being converted to the ACC linear channel:

Virginia essentially expanded its production space on the court level of JPJ from one-and-a-half to three control rooms, the better to juggle simultaneous events requiring the video board, ACC Network Extra — that’s the enhanced online programming, previously ESPN3, which launched in August — and eventually the linear ACC Network.
ACCN Extra is basically ESPN3 re-branded, the studios need to be up a running so all the kinks can be worked out before full network launch. Keep in mind that every school with have the capability to deliver TV quality briadcasts over digital or linear platforms

That could be part of the reasoning. My guess is that they would just prefer every school have a full year's experience of producing sports so the product on the linear channel experiences fewer hiccups. It sounds like they've learned from the SEC Network experience that easing into things might make the product better from the jump.

My interpretation of that section is that it's just meant to mean that programming that used to be branded as ESPN3 will be categorized as ACC Network Extra.

If you use the WatchESPN app at all, you'll notice that programming that doesn't also show up on any of the linear ESPN channels will be branded as ESPN3.

Hugh, great info and thanks for posting the article. I was wondering why there was so much videos posted on the ACC Channel on Apple TV for each of the schools. I guess it was the videos that were mentioned in the article.

Technically that's not true. Clemson is ready as they were one of the schools that partnered with ESPN a few years ago to install broadcast facilities, so we have the facilities in place. I imagine where his confusion is coming from is the fact that with football moving out of the West Zone into the Reeves Complex that space would be made to expand and improve. Also the Reeves Complex has facilities that are directly linked to ESPN in Bristol.
UNC has a production studio inside the Smith Center that's capable of ESPN quality broadcasts & produces 150 events per year. The new studio will be attached to the Koury Natatorium & have 12,000 sg ft ,3 control rooms & 2 studios
“It is a massive undertaking by the university,” says Scott Rinehart, broadcast technology program director, Fighting Irish Media, which will move into its new home — a state-of-the-art media center — next August. “It’s a media center that takes the Fighting Irish Media mission of telling the story of Notre Dame through the lens of athletics and expanding it to all of campus. We’re supporting non-athletic events today, but this just takes it to a whole other level.

The media center will be located on the first floor of the complex’s east building and operated by a newly formed group called Notre Dame Studios, reporting to the university’s Office of Information Technology. The 18,000-sq.-ft. facility will support all facets of Notre Dame media production. From digital content in support of academics and faith-based initiatives to production of the videoboard shows in Notre Dame Stadium, Purcell Pavilion, and Compton Family Ice Arena, it will be a resource for students, faculty, and staff.

Although Purcell Pavilion (basketball and volleyball) and Compton Family Ice Arena (hockey) already have videoboards, next year, Notre Dame Stadium will feature video as part of the game-day experience for the first time. Notre Dame, in partnership with ANC Sports, will install a Mitsubishi Diamond Vision videoboard at the south end and ribbon boards along the east and west facades. The venue’s existing scoreboards will be removed.

“The media center,” says Dan Skendzel, senior associate athletic director for media and branding, “is the manifestation of University President Rev. John Jenkins CSC and VP/Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick’s vision when they approved the launch of Fighting Irish Media: get started in athletics but always with the intent of scaling capability to support the university’s academic and faith missions.”

The media center will house two control rooms to support live productions for ACC Network Extra and NBC digital shows as well as live linear-television broadcasts. Two additional studio spaces, six edit rooms, and two audio rooms will also be brought online. Existing FIM facilities of two edit rooms, three control rooms, and one studio will be folded into a new IP-centric infrastructure. All venues —academic, athletic, and faith — will be connected via single-mode fiber to the media center."

Is anyone else like me -- excited enough about the launch of the ACCN that when it does "go live", you think you will tune in to more than just your school's appearances?

I don't think everyone will be like that, but if enough are, then the network will have a pretty solid base to build from.

These investments on campus to support the network are pretty extensive. It will be cool to finally see it come to fruition.
Not that it matters that much to us fans but I wonder if the ACC schools will start doing the production work for all telecasts, including football and basketball. ESPN wouldn't have to roll in their trucks, cameras, camera operators, etc. They would just have to send a producer and announcers because the schools would provide everything else -- the cameras, the camera operators, the assistant producers, the control room, etc. That would lower ESPN expenses significantly which would, we hope, yield dividends for ACC schools.

I hate to be the wet blanket but, no, not me.

I wish everyone well, though.

That is my understanding, yes.
Construction is underway at Clemson, in the Jervey Athletic Center, for a new control room and studio.

ESPN may not even send announcers. Even if they are on-site, it seems like they are glued to the monitors most of the time.

I would be inclined to watch more ACC teams. Especially future opponents. I'd watch any ACC game over OSU v Michigan. I can see everything I want to see about OSU v Michigan on Sports Center.

^^^ THIS ^^^. I'm guessing the announcers never leave the ESPN studio, they just beam everything in (multiple camera angles, plus they aren't likely to talk much about what's going on off-camera anyway). That just leaves field-level reporters, which could just as well be provided by the host schools.
So no announcers but the SEC dominated talking heads at the SEC studio that all survived the recent cuts while the one outwardly pro ACC talking head got canned?

Gonna be....interesting.

There will be announcers. I just think they will be in-studio in Charlotte or at the mother ship rather than on-site.

If they operate from Bristol, it'll probably be a bunch of Syracuse guys.

If they operate from Charlotte, it'll be a mixture of ACC and SEC guys.

Are you implying something about Syracuse's future in the ACC??
