Oh my gosh... This got lost in the news cycle..

What a tragedy!
Sounds like the management company has a huge hand in this.

That thing went up on fire jiffy quick, speculation is that the new exterior cladding enhanced the fire.
It's very sad and shocking something like this could happen in developed countries in 2017. I heard people were told to stay put in their apartments during the initial stages of the fire.

IDK why the police or anyone would say that, crazy. I trust my gut more. Only 1 stairwell also. We had a Dorm at UC, built in 71', 27 stories, one stairwell. It got closed down for not meeting fire code and then was imploded. Very sad.
Somebody probably didn't follow the building codes and an inspector probably got paid off.

They are probably shiteing their pantaloons.

The housing block in West London is managed by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation, on behalf of the council.

The 24-storey tower underwent a multi-million pound renovation project which was completed last year – but had no sprinkler system installed and residents raised safety concerns.

This included the installation of cladding – an item which some have blamed for the quick spreading of the fire in the early hours of June 14.

Does that mean government owned?

I read more into, and it seems like each "flat" in tower blocks such as Grenfell tower is, in theory, built to contain localized fires as they start. Obviously, this was not the case.

Quote:David Sibert, Fire Brigade Union fire safety expert, said: "The principle that tower blocks are built on is that every flat is a fire-resisting box - every flat is completely surrounded by fire-resisting construction from the rest of the building.
"So you should be able to set fire to your own flat and leave it to completely burn out and it won't affect anybody else in the building.

I imagine that they were built like that originally.

But as often is the case the firewall gets compromised by someone poking a hole to run cable TV, or new HVAC ducts, or whatever and the firewall is useless.

Another thing to consider is when these older buildings were built the fire load of an individual apartment was far less because most of the furnishings, etc. were built of metal, wood, and other natural materials. Couches back in the day were made of heavy wood then stuffed and covered with cotton. Now they are made with laminated wood and stuffed with polyester that's covered by more polyester. That toaster that used to be made of tin is now made of plastic as well. It increases the fire load and makes for explosive fire growth. Just in my career you could see a noticeable difference.
'LIT UP LIKE MATCHSTICKS' Grenfell Tower cladding ‘linked to horror blazes at high-rise blocks around the world’ turned tower into a tomb — as boss who oversaw £8.6m revamp admits he ‘doesn’t even know what it’s clad in’

Yeah sounds familiar.

I'm sure you have seen a local apartment building that has been redone with vinyl siding. Essentially the same thing. We called it solidified napalm.
