Quote:Maryland had not reached the NCAA baseball tournament in four decades when John Szefc took over as head coach. He promptly steered the Terps to three NCAA bids and two regional championships in five years.
That remarkable turnaround explains why athletic director Whit Babcock chose Szefc to revive Virginia Tech’s program, the appointment announced Friday.
Saw this earlier today. With the upgrades to English Field that should be in place by the start of next season and overall investment in the program, Szefc will have plenty of resources at his disposal.
Doesn't surprise me that this is being lauded as a great hire though - Whit Babcock has consistently nailed coaching hires since his arrival, plus baseball is the sport he played in college.

Reading between the lines of the press conference and the Maryland fans response I think the facilities are what made the difference. VT is about to open a first class facility and in their facilities master plan it's going to be at least the 2020-2021 season before Maryland does anything to their dump.
Sad that a once proud program like Syracuse has become such an absolute joke that their only claim to fame these days is beating a Tommy West Clemson team over 20 years ago. Of course looking at your record since then one understands.
But hey...since we don't play UVA every year anymore I guess somebody had to become the tender white meat on our schedule.

It's sad when the only way that an almost top 20 all time program can win if it resorts to hiring a crack pot coach who, through bizarre and dubiously legal football-related religious rituals, has apparently created an atmosphere of sexual repression that is so extreme that significant chunks of the team systematically molest other players as a "fun" outlet.
But hey, to quote a line from a song that's almost certainly popular in the Clemson locker room, "you are material girls living in a material world," and all the wackos can't fit in Waco. Cograts on your team and your undying interest in Syracuse athletics, but just know that we don't think of you "that" way. Leave the orange to us
