Coach Smith sounded pretty optimistic about the upcoming season and spoke highly of the team he and his staff has put together.

He expects us to "be a very good team". IMO, a very good team makes the NCAA Tourney and - barring upset - advances.
But...but...Tubby doesn't do media...too busy playing golf...doesn't care...

He is playing golf and I commend him for it.

Obviously coach speak. You gonna hold him to that? You could also say relative to the average person, any player that plays D1 is "very good" at basketball.

Tubby, an experienced coach, understands the need for circumspection about stoking expectations. Either he lied or he means it. I choose the latter.

Is it possible he's just a positive person? So if we fail to make the tournament, you're gonna be upset because the coach said we were gonna be good? What is he supposed to say?

"Eh, we might be OK, but I doubt it. We lost almost our whole team from last year and had to recruit last minute just to fill out the roster. You guys should probably prepare for a bumpy ride. I'd be shocked if I don't get fired after next season."

Just trying to hang with the board.

He could have just emphased the process (e.g., we will play hard, smart, and with fast tempo), but opted for outcome prediction.

You can't fault him for that.
Tubby gets criticized for last season blowing up.
Tubby gets criticized for finishing season with no post season.
Tubby gets criticized for 5, or more, lost count, players defecting after season was over.
Tubby gets criticized for going after D2 players.
Tubby gets criticized for telling us we can't get top recruits, and then proving it by not getting any.
Tubby gets criticized for making $3,000,000 a year and giving his kid a job, yet seemed to be a complete non-factor in recruiting until recently.
Tubby gets criticized, just like any other coach who hasn't earned his keep.

This is our coach, and he should be doing his job.

He never said they'd make the tournament. That's your ridiculous statement. Hell, players not quitting would be an improvement. You know good and well this team has almost zero chance to make the NCAA.

Hate the coach? Want to make a statement? Don't buy tickets and don't watch the games. That'll get Tubby fired quicker than your constant whining. I'd like to be loaded up and be preseason #1, but just because I want it doesn't mean it will happen.

These are your players and your team, is it that hard to support them? Every one of them had other offers, but they chose to be Tigers. Try your best to not act like a spoiled brat...

Your ire is misdirected. Tubby made the statement, not me.

Yes, I think "very good teams" make the NCAA Tourney. What other tournament, if any, is the destination of very good teams? I respect your opinion.

My evaluation of Tubby is based on his job performance. I do not know him personally, but he seems like a good person. Obviously, he cares deeply about his family, markets himself well, and is financially savvy (the mark of a smart man).

I continue to buy season tickets and attend games because I support the program. I do not think "destroying the village in order to save it" tactic is sound. The program is greater than any coach.
Don't listen to 83'. This is his setup to lay into Tubby if desired outcome he has created doesn't happen. You will not hear the end of how Tubby failed.

Just trying to hang with the board.

Actually Tubby made a statement about the team, from it you established your own expectations. I didn't hear Tubby say we'd make the tourney. It could be interpreted that even a team going .500 could be a better "team" than last season...just depends upon how the reader/listener interprets.

In the article, Tubby is quoted in his own words "“I know we’ll be a very good team.”.

There is no dispute about what he said. If Tubby considers a .500 record the mark of a very good team, then we should change coaches because it is an unacceptable result for Tiger basketball.

Don't misunderstand, I applaud Tubby for setting an objective that will be challenging to reach given the talent level , inexperience, and lack of outside shooting of our team.

You did it again. Tubby said, we'll be a good team. YOU interpreted it to mean to you, we'll make the tourney. I indicated that to others hearing we'd be a better team might be .500 record but playing more as a "team". The one thing you keep mentioning is that it means we make the tourney - no, that's your interpretation, not what Tubby said. A good followup question might have been to ask what very good meant to Tubby in terms of wins & I think at that point Tubby would say, I don't make predictions on our record (like he has done before). So the question is not what Tubby said but how the listener interprets what he said in terms of objections. To me, Tubby set NO objectives at all, just we'll be a good team.

We are at an impasse. I respect your opinion, but based on what is known now I cannot accept that a "very good team" performs at anything other than at a very good level.
