Will be at home opener... please be a night game. Would love to not have to deal w/ early Sept. heat!

When do the scheduled game times get released?
The CAA still doesn't even know if it has a TV deal. Last year's slate was released in late june. It's still going to be awhile in all likelihood.

It's usually late june or july time frame.
Based on past few years, guessing first 3 weeks (non-conference schedule)...

S-2 at ECU, 6pm (ESPN-3)
S-9 vs ETSU, 6pm
S-16 vs NSU, 4pm

I can't remember the last time the home opener wasn't a night game, I think you can rest easy there.

Yep. In the last 20 years I don't remember a single home opener that wasn't a night game.

I also can't remember the last time we had a decent team for our home opener :-)

I think given last season's results I will choose to stick with the current scheduling formula. JMU gets plenty tested and top25 games in conference play along with an FBS game.

Maybe if we JMU scheduled like SamHoustonSt their home-opener opponent would be an issue.

Dang we just won the National Title in football......can we not complain until after JMU actually starts playing.

BWAHAHAHAHA. Like SHSU would actually schedule a quality opponent away from home on their schedule. It'd be far more realistic to schedule UVA at home than Soft Houston.

Kidding aside, I agree. It would have to be a game that would warrant some TV interest. NDSU... absolutely. ETSU... Madizone!!

Well, according to that "STUPID" survey sent out a couple years ago, someone within the ranks of JMU considers 4:00pm to be night. I think they must have come from Alaska where the daylight is much shorter at some point in the year. I could go with 6:00pm being considered a night game, maybe even 5:00, but never 4:00.

ditto. I have an absolute blast at the home opener, it's sad for fans that can't enjoy it. they're entitled to their opinion, it just sucks for them. It's a great day.

FIFY
A lot of our fans are older and travel 2-4 hours to see a game. The 6 pm start means they get home after midnight if they stay for the entire game and fireworks. A number of people I spoke with on Godwin Field a few years ago complained about the 6 pm start to me. I am assuming these same people complained in their surveys too. A 4 pm start allows these folks to drive home Saturday and not have the hotel expense.

There is a lesson here. Dont get old, plus 6pm = longer for tailgate.

I just naturally get the hotels now to save having to drive back to DC after a game, but I totally can understand why the 4 PM is easier for many. Will say though by November unless it's a 1 or 2 PM start it feels like Midnight getting home at 8 or 9 PM 03-zzz

It's been many years since they've done post game fireworks. Wish they'd bring them back. My kids always enjoyed them.

Hey, I'm old, I travel about as far as anyone, Charlotte. I love games in the dark and under the lights. However, I never travel all the way back, I try to get a couple hours down the road. To be honest, rarely do I get a hotel room as my folks are still alive and live right on the border of VA/NC.
Latest sunsets year for Harrisonburg are June 22nd-July 2nd, with 8:43 sunsets.

9/9 ETSU Harrisonburg sunset 7:32, civil twilight, 7:59, nautical twilight 8:30. I'm no fireworks expert, but from briefly perusing the web it seems large scale fireworks displays work best if you wait until nautical twilight (course are other variables like cloud cover, types of fireworks, etc). Last year Morehead game with 13 TDs was 3:10 hrs. CCSU game with 11 TDs was 2:56 hrs. So lets stipulate a non televised game vs a cupcake is around 3 hrs. That would mean with if doing fireworks wouldn't want to start the game before 5:30, so a 6 PM start time makes the most sense.

9/16 Norfolk State sunset 7:32, civil twilight, 7:48, nautical twilight 8:19. If doing fireworks that game could maybe get away with a 5 PM start.

If JMU does do fireworks (have no idea if will or not) the better game to do them would be the 2nd home game vs NSU. The home opener the week before there already is an incentive to come- its the home opener. Need an extra incentive for people to come to that 2nd home OOC cupcake game..

Trouble is unless they can produce the world's lowest fireworks display you'll be able to see the show from most of campus. Maybe they should have a drawing of people present and let the winner light the match (as well as get a gift card to Pedro's of course).
