Looks like Coastal isn't alone in being scammed out of large sums of money by email.

I would laugh at you...but it sounds like something that would happen to us. So I won't.

Dang if I knew it was that easy to trick the hillbillies, I would have done it a long time ago.
Thank goodness $1.5 million was recovered!

Sounds like App needs to schedule a home and home with Trump U (Liberty) ASAP to make up for this loss.
I keep checking to see if it is April 1.
City I live in got taken for about $600,000 when someone hacked an employee's computer and was able to access the city's online payment system to send wire transfers to several banks and of course as soon as the money hit it moved offshore.

I imagine the whole thing went down something like this:

Dear Apps.,

In an effort to expedite various building projects on your campus, please forward future funding payments to the folowing financial institution in The Cayman Islands, my favorite place to bank. Use the enclosed routing number. This is all on the up and up (wink, wink), so no need to run the new procedure by anyone.

Always a pleasure "taking suckers like you" eeeerrrr doing business with you.

And I/we look forward to future opportunities to take you to the cleaners.

Cordially,

The Scammers.

PS, Do have a lovely day . . .etc. etc.

Meanwhile, in The Apps Financial Nerve Center (scene of intense discussion):

Billybob: "What do ya think Earl?" "I think it might be fishy."

Earl: "Don't be a blame fool Billybob." "If init was fishy, Would they have signed their name?" "Looks legit to me, send it."

They could not go after GS's money, since it's mostly buried in random location around Statesboro. Cash withdraw via shovel?
This is a serious problem in general with scammers and hackers. Wannacry hit a lot of places and has caused havoc with hospitals. Frankly these types should be treated like violent crimes for all the suffering they cause.
It will get worse. Governments are actively battling in cyberspace. Their work filters out to criminals and who's to say some of it isn't state sponsored? We all have to be vigilant for our personal security out there.
Perhaps a wealthy Nigerian Prince needed the money?

This is happening in real estate transactions too. False instructions are being sent to lenders and real estate attorneys the day of closing. The emails appear legit with company logos and headers, but they're imposters that intercept the funds. Always confirm with a phone call to the parties involved before wiring funds.
What are these "funds" you all speak of? Wiring? What? *eats ramen patiently awaiting a response*

Mason Jars..... in mason jars...

This was clearly and inside job. Someone from the construction company passed along information about who to contact at the university.

The first question is what actions did the University's comptroller take to verify the change in routing numbers? The perpetrators must be stupid because transactions like that are tracked daily by the U.S. Treasury for suspicious activity.

My guess, the confirmation of receipt was an attempt to by time to distribute the funds, close the receiving account, and scrub their business information filed with the NC Dept of State and Dept of Revenue. Plus you have to use your ID to obtain PO Boxes.
