Big12 doesn't break up but instead starts new FBS division as follows
P5 division
SEC
BIG10
MAC
ACC
SUN BELT
New college FB FBS division
Big12
AAC
MWC
PAC
C-USA
This would be two FBS divisions to play for a college FB super bowl at end of season
This would elevate college FB like never before... imo
Both would have their own playoffs and each division champion would play for the college FB super bowl
Why not ?
I know this would change recruiting like crazy
P5ers will not go for this I know...but come on guys
The fan base would explode even more, networks gotta see this much?
Lol wut?
It's off season man, have mercy, been waiting on the bus all day...
It might force ND and other indys to join a conference

Well--that idea is kinda out there. But there is an idea that might be almost as crazy that actually does make sense. I think the Pac-12 and Big12 could merge and solve most all their issues. The group would increase their depth, footprint size, and the number of solid "king programs". The Pac12 gets into another time zone, more than doubles their footprint size, and adds enough cable boxes to insure the success of the Pac12 Network. The Big12 gains stability, a conference network, and gives UT and Oklahoma peer partners that make the Big12 a viable a long term home that is in no danger of collapse.

A merger might mean a few teams are left out (ala SWC-Big 8 "merger" in '96) or it might include everyone if the scheduling issues can somehow be solved. The autonomous conferences could fix it if they want to. They would already have 2 out of 5 votes. They just need one conference to go along with it.
You are closer to something that might work, but I like my delusional, oh! I mean divisions idea better

Perhaps include Houston instead of West Virginia? That would give 9 votes to disband the conference (which is enough.) I believe West Virginia is fine in the long-term - either ACC, SEC, or power Independent with non-football sports in A-10 or Big East (perhaps.)

Houston would steal some of that market away from Texas A&M. Maybe include New Mexico and UNLV to get to 24 with new, decent markets. I see New Mexico as a potential "Utah" and UNLV as a potential "TCU" - not likely but possible. If the PAC is willing but doesn't want Baylor, then go with San Diego St. I am pulling hard for Boise St, but I think they're best bet is a western wing of the AAC at this point (we'll see 20 years down the road).

Pacific: California, Stanford, USC, UCLA, San Diego St, UNLV
West: Washington, Washington St, Oregon, Oregon St, Arizona, Arizona St
Southwest: Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, New Mexico, Utah
Central: Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St

Let's see now. In the last six years, no team from either the PAC or the Big 12 has played for the national championship. Under this proposal, one or the other of them would get to play in it every year. Why wouldn't the B1G, SEC and ACC go along with this? Give me a minute - I'll come up with something.
Because it makes cents for all of FBS colleges and you root for college sports right ken d?

But a team from one or the other has participated in the playoff every year and there is the danger than both will participate in any given year. With a merger--there's a much smaller chance the champ from any conference is getting left out. Not only that, but it sets up a perfect 4-conference 4-slot playoff. The big issue is going to be playoff shares. Right now those 2 conference bring in twice as much CFP income as they would as a merged conference. Change the CFP payout to be based on a "per team" basis and the the problem is solved.
I thought this thread would have gotten more clicks, the more I think about two divisions the better sense it makes imo
05-10 has officially been declared "Make A David State Type Post Day"

Terrigen Mist? Cocaine?
I think you meant to type:

Big12 doesn't break up but instead starts new "Division IV" as follows:

SEC
BIG10
ACC
PAC
Big 12
(perhaps with a few call-ups)

Remaining schools stay at FBS division
AAC
MWC
C-USA
MAC
Sun Belt
(perhaps also aligning with the Big Sky conference and a few other call-ups)

This would elevate college FB like never before

Each would have their own, separate playoffs and each would host their own national championship

This is where things are heading, so why wait?

I know this would change recruiting like crazy. The G5 would be toast.
I still think an 8 team playoff with all P5 champs, one G5 champ, and 2 at large schools, with the first round on campus the week after conference championships would be huge for tv.

I root for "college sports" as opposed to "professional sports". I don't root for all FBS colleges. In fact, I'm really not very interested in at least half of them. I'm especially not interested in increasing the number of schools that don't deserve to be in the playoffs getting a slot that a better team should have.

Personally, I am not trying to come up with ways to improve the lot of G5 conferences unless the market is demanding it (which it isn't).

My personal preference, as I have said many times, is to retain five power conferences with a four team playoff, in order to ensure that one of them gets left out every year. Because if there is no chance of being left out, there's not much excitement for the regular season, which lasts a lot longer than the playoffs do.
