(05-09-2017 07:48 PM)BlazrDawg Wrote: [ -> ]Thats terrific. Ga Southern is coached by a former Blazer coach, Tyson Summers, who is a great guy!!

Tyson Summers is a great guy but most GS fans have little faith in his head coaching abilities at this time after the Eagles offensive output last season. If he does not right the ship he will not last much longer at GS.

It was his first year..harsh fans over there. 5-7 first year isn't terrible.

Georgia southern has tradition. We don't. For us, 5-7 isn't bad. For them, it is.

i agree, but they've only been D1 for a few years. Its not like they can expect to go 10-2 every year now that they've made the jump to D1..

The biggest let down for Eagle fans in Tyson Summers first year as HC was the Eagles running game last year. In 2015 the Eagles gained 4719 yard during the season for a game rushing average of 363 yards per game. Going into Summer's first season 2016 as HC last year the entire offensive backfield returned for the season from 2015 season. Last year with the same backfield the Eagles offensive only averaged 224 yards per game for a season total of 3007 yards rushing. All Eagle fans place the blame for this drop in offensive production on the coaching staff. After the 2016 season Summers replaced all but one of the teams offensive coaches.

By Georgia Southern standards 5-7 is a very bad year first year coach or not. Since restarting football in 1982 Georgia Southern record is 312-122-1 which is a .718 win %. In the 35 football seasons since restarting football the Eagles have only had 4 losing seasons. Yes Georgia Southern fans expect to win.
Georgia Southern has been D1 since restarting football in 1982. The Eagles have only been FBS for the last 3 seasons. 23-13 record since moving to FBS.

The above reasons are why Summers job as HC is very warm.
I will say this. The move up to FBS is a different beast. Some of that tradition goes out the window when you meet new competition. I was at Troy state when they were a traditional 1-AA power. They maintained their status after the move for a little while until teams stepped up to compete with them. Even though we talk down to them, the Sunbelt isn't exactly cupcake city.

From what Ive heard, there may have been some problems with some of those coaches that got let go after 2015 and it was hard for Tyson to get them replaced with a cohesive group of new coaches. I will keep my fingers crossed that the future for the Eagles will be as bright as when Erk was running the show.

None of the offensive assistant coaches were let go by Georgia Southern after the 2015 season. The following coaches went to Tulane with Willie Fritz. Doug Ruse Offensive Coordinator, Alex Atkins O-line, Dee McGee the RB coach was set to go to Tulane also but was offered and excepted the same job at Georgia. Matt Barrett WR coach went to Southeastern Louisiana as Offensive Coordinator. The only coach that stayed at GS from Fritz coaching staff is Chad Lunsford who was TE coach and the Eagles recruiting coordinator. Lunsford was also named the program’s assistant head coach in 2017.
Where Eagle fans see Tyson failure last season is that he did not hire an offensive staff that could put together an execute a game plan that worked to Georgia Southern strengths. By the time the season got started it was too late and with Tyson entire coaching background being on the defensive side of the ball not being able to fix the problem as the season progressed.
Hell, half of Troy's traveling crowd is their band.

Don't listen to those idiots on the Sun Belt board. Apparently they really like crack. We will bring a nice crowd. We are happy to be playing you guys.
Don't bother trying to re as on with them. They have a city school bias. To hear them say it we only have 50 fans per game and they take 15k everywhere they travel.

They have also lost to GSU two years in a row including their worst home loss ever. So yeah they are salty.

Before rising to D1, both GA Southern and Troy were able to feast each year on SEC players dropped by those programs and able to play immediately without "sitting out". Once they lost out on those "refugee" players, their records flattened out considerably. Getting those players to come as freshmen is a different ball game. Their new staffs are part of the school's adjustment to their new realities.
GS is adjusting to the fact that they run the tripple option in Statesboro. Not a lot of 3 star players signing up for that.

They tried to move away from it last season with dismal results and fan disapproval. Going back to it this year...
So, my take away from all of this is: How great is it that we are scheduling games 5 and 6 years down the road??!!

That is the now normal scheduling lead time for getting the more attractive program schools. Those that are available at the last minute are like the last minute dates available for the prom. Both can be surprisingly good, but are not normally the best bets.

Wilmington NC , eh?? I have memories of getting stuck in the sand at the beach there in my 65 mustang way back when; was dating a gal whose dad was a Sgt at Camp Geiger. Good thing he didnt find about that little adventure, hehe.

That episode reminds me of Christmas break in 1959 when a buddy and I made a grand tour down the east coast of Florida -- getting my '56 Chevy stuck on the beach at Cape Canaveral -- on our way to Key West. We had planned to fly to Havana but got there too late for the last flight that night (tix were $35 round trip). The next morning we were told that no flights could go there because Baptista had fled Cuba that night and Castro had closed the airport there.

We went back to Miami in time to see the Orange Bowl parade and then drove up the west coast on our way back home. One can only wonder what might have happened if we had gotten to the Key West airport a couple hours earlier to make that last flight.

Right...my point was that a few years ago we were getting a little worried because no new games were being scheduled that far out.

Yeah, we've not been in Wilmington very long, but we absolutely love it. Saw someone a few weeks ago who got stuck out on the beach, too. They tried to take their front wheel drive sedan out...not a good idea.
